  • Hit in head w/ lure

So buddy got a beach house this wk so we decided to kayak the canals at night to see if we can pick up the trout. Reading multiple posts i learned the Dos and Donts of fishing someone else's green lights. We only fished the lights where noone was home and made sure we used lures that would not snag. So im fishing and im trying to get by one group of ppl who actually fishing on there lights therefore not to interrupt i hugged the opposite wall of the residents fishing (so close i can touch the wall). i also made sure to drift by that side and not paddle as to not cause anything that would scare the fish away for them. well all the sudden i get smacked in the head with a lure obviously one of the guys fishing was trying to hit me and when he did he just said something in the lines of "my fault" i was pissed but seeing there were also children there i just kept my mouth shut and floated on. i dunno if they did the same for a boat that was trolling through as well b/c the boat stopped in the middle of there lights, exchanged words, and revved up his engine b/f taking off.

You did the right think paddling away. You are going back to crush his lights later right?

Thats weird.... You could have been an home owner trying to get back to your dock. If you were just passing thru and not fishing their lights. Plus, my understanding is that all they can really do is just turn their lights off. They don't own public water. Plus, whether and accident(Them appologizing doesn't make it a accident) or not, it is still considered assault, wich if I remember correctly is a felony.

I know we fisherman get angry when someone comes close to us why we are fishing. I had a kayaker on Saturday come so close to my anchored boat he could have checked the oil in my Suzuki Big Block 150. I held my tongue because he kept on going and didn't partake in our multiple hookups.

Sorry that happened to you. If you fish enough on Galveston Bay, it's bound to happen a few hundred times....

Man that sucks, nice job though on keeping your cool. The only trouble I've had with canal lights is this old cranky man that comes out in his robe to turn of his lights when I'm fishing them.

I agree, keep your cool. With kids around and more then likely alcohol in their system it might have gotten out of control. Like Monte says, pay back are a mother and don't mess with someones mommy!

                            hmmm.....

I think we have all experienced lack of courtesy on the water...most of it appears to be from folks out there with an all for me notion of the water – “its public so I have as much right as you do”. Its true that it is a shared resource, but this does not mean the users should lose respect each others us of it. Personally, I never fish someone else’s lights, even though they may be set up in a public right of way and therefore the owners are taking their chances with bystanders using it, I personally do not it as a courtesy. I think the owner of the lights had as much “right” to be upset of what they perceived as someone homing in on their action as when people do it to us, so this talk of retaliation seems way out of place.
When we have a rod bowed over, no one likes to be pushed up on by others and to me this is not any different. Fishing some ones lights (without first asking) or moving in on another boat or cutting off a drift or a wader or any of that shows a lack of courtesy. It’s hard to tell sometimes if people do it out of lack of courtesy or just plain stupidity, but if its do to a lack of courtesy, I think these kinds of forums are good way to get the word out and discuss as a group what is proper etiquette. Hopefully, if we all practice what we preach, others will see and follow.
