Did you keep the knock off lure? It would have been funny if you tied the lure to your kayak and started to paddle off....make him cut his own line or strip it clean....ha ha!

You don't lower a shotgun down on someone unless your going to use it... Don't throw a lure at someone's and think your not going to hit them... Just plain stupid. It could have been a lot worse that a-hole could have set the hook and then hell would have been unleashed I guarantee you!

Ok this is a good one!!! Ok Lets go through the options.
1. Remind him we can fish or fight and I am alot better fighter than a fisherman. That one usually gets their attention.
2 Stop and fished their light and have a lure chunking contest which I am certain I would have won.
3. Move on and do nothing and teach the kid to turn a cheek
4. Go and whip their arse and teach their kids if you do stupid stuff you get a beat down.

On another note let we ask this question. If I was fishing that canal and was on fish and nightfall came. Who has rights to that spot? Can the guy just turn his lights on and I have to leave. Can he not fish just because I am there?

Unfortunately for the home owner he dont own squat but that house and land. He does however for the most part get to fish without crowds. Which they typically enjoy so they can haul undersized and multiple limits back to the house. He has made an investment to be there but he doesn't own the water. If I want to fish there I can tuff teet for him.

Now having said all that there is nothing worse than a Rat or a Potlicker!!!

I agree with everyone here that the guy at the lights in this situation did over react....as satisfying as it might be to launch a lure at someone, its just not smart. What I am trying to get at here is an understanding of why he may have over reacted. Is he just some jerk marking his “territory”, which seems to be the overwhelming consensus on this forum, or was he, like many here, tired of the potlickers and took it too far? I agree 100% that the homeowners do not own the canals any more than they own the street in front of their house and anything they choose to do in the canal they have to do with that understanding. However, I don’t agree with this concept of that since its public, we can access it as we please without regard to others who may be using it at the same time.
Someone posted a good point, what if you are fishing and then the guy wants to come out and turn on his lights? I would say that since you are all ready there, then you have “dibs” and the guy with the lights can either wait till you finish, fish anyway (which from my point of view will be moving in on YOUR spot) or be cool about it and turn on the lights and toss you a beer – not likely to happen though. Think of it this way – what if you are at the beach and got yourself all set up....the big cabana is up, the chairs are out, cooler and table are set, etc and then 3 or 4 dudes just walk up out of no where, don’t say a word and set up their stuff under your cabana, and they do this because they want some shade too. It’s a public beach after all and they have as much right to that spot as you do, you don’t own the beach or that spot just the cabana, but those guys can freely use the shade it provides because its on public property. They are not using the actual cabana, because it’s your private property, they are just using the shade it provides. They may have the right to do that, but is it cool with you that they do? Too me, this situation with fishing private lights and just fishing in general is not much different – someone has a set up that they clearly intend for personal use, even though its on public property, so its hard for me to understand why anyone feels they can move in on it. Sure, they have the right to be in that spot too, but is it cool to do it?

If I saw Lurefisher, Dbarham and or Corndog paddling down my canal to fish the lights, I would throw a cold beer at them (and hope they would return the favor!). No need to ever be mean, unless someone asks for it by encroaching on ya while fishing. As that fine, upstanding citizen Rodney King so astutely stated: "Why can't we just all get along?" Each situation calls for thought prior to response. Just 3 weeks ago, that Pathfinder trolled right in on us and even cast around one of our guys while he waded, my buddy politely (and sarcastically) asked them "Excuse me, but am I in your way?" and they sheepishly responded "No, you're alright where you're at." Some folks will never get it that they are STUPID and RUDE, and since ya can't fix stupid (without going to jail yourself), so best is to avoid it. Too bad it is that way. There'd be a lot less morons in the world and especially the gummint.

I think Slyel said He was trying to get past the people fishing without paddleing and hugging the opposite side. Therefore not stopping to fish "His Lights". The azzhole then hits him with the lure. Is that what I read? Therefore (no offense) the B/S story about the guys coming to get under Your cabana on the beach is just that, B/S. The best thing You could have done was just what You did. Just go about Your business and mark it up as just another Azz on the water. Just My Opinion!

Sigh....beandaddy...yes, it has been established that slyel was just passing by and the other guy was in the wrong and being a jerk....yes, I know and agree. But that’s not what the analogy with the cabana was about –the analogy was about, and what I have been trying to ask here, the etiquette of fishing around other peoples lights (AND YES, I KNOW SLYEL WAS NOT FISHING THIS GUYS LIGHTS) and then further, how this may or may not extend to fishing near or around other people in general . Come on, this is a forum of saltwater fishing enthusiast’s it would seem to be a great place to discuss something of this nature!
