  • Galveston Bay Boaters...

Need to learn some manners out there on the water.

I'm sick and tired of the bull**** out there...makes me hate fishing on the weekends. Look, when you see a wader, group of waders, drifting boat...whatever, it's not okay to go around them and cut off their wade/drift. If you try to hop a group of waders and one of the guys in the groups keeps wading right at your boat to push you out of the way, get over it, he's just protecting his fishing zone that you're barging in. I/he was there first. Why stop and drift through an area that you see a group of people wading at? That doesn't automatically mean there is going to be fish there. Why ruin a shoreline, cove, reef...whatever...to drift over it and then motor right back out(ruining the locale) in about ten minutes, because you saw some others fishing there?

Like i said in my report, i think that most people down there are boat operators first and fisherman second...or third...or fourth...or maybe they're just not even in the ball park. Whatever...i'll keep fighting my fish with my rod in the water and stringing my fish underwater just to keep you off of us.

Oh ya...and to the two guys in the jon boat on Sunday(4/11/10), nice work on burning the shoreline after i pushed you out of the area we were trying to wade to. Stay classy...and fishless.

    Regards,
    The Ranting Boat Operator(wannabe fisherman)

I'll admit to being a bit non-plussed by some of these rules. Ideally, everyone would be able to keep 1000 yards away from anyone. Demanding all this room gets me a bit peeved sometimes though, especially in constricted spaces like Cold Pass. I'm a most courteous captain and anyone will tell you that. Running thrrough someone else's drift or wade may happen a from time to time because there's no other way around. I only ask people to consider that before they get peeved. People that purposely screw up others' fishing are despicable.

The rant I always have is about all the people who think they're doing you a favor by slowing down just enough to make the largest wake possible. Most people here (Texas) seem to be completely ignorant of how to slow down properly for docked boats or folks fishin'. They knock my boat around or muddy up the bottom I'm fishin' and then wave happily to me as they come by at half throttle. Just hammer down, or learn how to slow down properly folks. The bow must settle completely, that means idle speed for several seconds to begin with, then you can bump it up, but you can't let the bow come back up until you are past the people/dock/boat. If you can't do this, please just stay at full throttle.

              Moses Lake

This kind of thing sometimes cannot be avoided. Especially at the flood gate at Moses lake. When you think about it ..that is a navigational area..in the middle of the channel. This past weekend I had to go out into Dickinson Bay to get back to port. There were several boats fishing..or should I say anchored in the channel. I drove by at Idle speed not to interrupt there fishing anyway. Even though those boaters were hogging the channel. I still gave them respect. I guess I was brought up right.

I hate when people cut off our drift but that's weekend fishing. But I also hate when people fish right on the edge of channels like around the slp where a couple feet and you could be beached but yell at you when you have to run by them to safley get out I mean I'll fish the channels but expect boats to go by.

Don't even get me started on those.

Last summer, it was a picture perfect day behind the pass. Tide was coming in, bait was getting busted along the edges of the guts, and the trout were hungry. All of a sudden i could see/hear these two jet ski's coming from the east. I turned back around and continued fishing figuring they wouldn't run all this way. WRONG. Not only did they run our way, they ran within 50 yards of us...blasted through the majority of the flats, and kept right on going through to cold pass.

I wish Galveston island would put a ban on all jet skis...man that'd make my day.

Sounds like the water you are fishing is not shalllow enough and have enough oysters in to keep all the yuppies away. I guess you need a better boat.

the fishing was good,it was the catching that was bad.

Water turds=jetskis. I love watching them drift off at dusk when they've run outta gas and are 100 yards from a shoreline in 2-3' of water and could easily walk to Bob Smith road but are too ignorant to realize they are on a sand flat in 2' of water and they start drifting towards deep water thinking they are already in 6-8' of water. Maybe had they not zipped within 20 yards of me on there way out and did circles where I was fishing, I may have "seen" em floating away from shoreline. They actually pulled almost to my boat while I was anchored and did the circles. I figured if they were stupid enuf to mess with my fishing, maybe they were just wanting to float awhile.
