  • Reds and Trouts under the lights

OK, I saw the post from Tidalguide with the pictures of the fish under the green lights, so I wanted to give you some more information on what happened last night.

I walked onto my deck to look at all the shad or whatever it was swirling in the lights, hundreds if not thousands. I took a video, but for some reason I can not get it sent to my email. Any, I walked two door down and the reds and trouts were going CRAZY!!!! I said forget taping this, grab your gear, which I did. Threw tops, tails and even gulp, no takers. They just smiled at me and kept on eating.

I then when down the canal so to a friends who has very large green lights beaming down on the water. You should have seen all of the reds and trouts in there. I did not have my gear, so I watch Meliane fish for awhile with her son. She nailed a nice 23" red!

Bottom line, I bust my tail in the water for the last two days with only two trout to show for it and you see all these fish off your dock, go figure!!!

I use a VERY SMALL bait for them. Go get some small crappie lures. I use a grub looking thing with a curly tail about an inch long with a small, very small jig head. Not the strongest hook out there, but when thay won't hit a regulat size plastic tail, thats what my back up is. It resembles a glass minnow. I will see if I can find a pic of them, but this is sometimes the only way I can get them to hit. SMALL is key. Work it on the outer edge of the light. Most time right over the light, they seem to look and go. Hits are most always in the edge to outside the light. Good luck.

I was thinking about the small glow shad as well, might have to go and get some today and hope they come back this evening. I will let you know how it goes.

Live shrinp on a bare treble hook-throw past the lights, wait for a big shadow or school, then reel fast bringing shrimp to surface and pow-almost everytime!!
"Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. I can't wait - headed down tonight! We use any of the glow plastics and "recharge" them with a flashlight every few casts. Cast to where your retrieve is through the outskirts of the lights and you'll kill 'em. We have two underwater lights and catch a lot of fish between them in the dark.

They'll also hit flies off the dock, but mostly when presented in the brightest part of the light. Only challenge is finding enough room to get a fly out there.

small, black flies with no flash. I mean no flash. Those little marabou crappie jigs work great, as long as you can cast them. You can also use a top water worked real slow, but its a one and done type thing cause the strike scares the rest of the school off.

I use a size 4 black clouser. It becomes an every cast thing. EVEN for the the big reds. I like to take time and sight cast to them. Gets ya ready for the reel deal on the in the shallows.

Oh and take off your shoes and creep up if you are on the dock. You wouldnt just walk up on a deer. The vibrations from foot steps radiate through the lateral lines and make the reds start drumming. Oh and throw them back, that way my clients have some fish to catch

i've had success using crickets for bait in the lights at night, using a very small treble hook. try it
