  • Dickinson Veterans Memorial - progress report (picture intensive)

In early February, we got the form work for the concrete base. The base is dug, the forms are set, and all the re-bar (a few hundred pounds of steel) is cut, bent, and tied and ready for inspection. The stones are on order, and will be here toward the end of February. With luck, we'll have the stones placed in March, and then we'll be planning the dedication ceremony. One major update - we raised enough during the first phase to get a sixth stone - for the Merchant Marines. We really appreciate all the help we've gotten from the group.

Yesterday, we had to pump out about 14 inches of water from the rain we've been having.

Concrete work started at 8:30 this morning. There were a lot of fishermen who gave up a day with the rod for a day with wheelbarrow and concrete tools. Mike Boston and Derek were prominent among the hard workers.

The concrete work is all done; we have one work day left to pull forms and restore some sod, then the company will install the monuments. They should be in Houston in a couple of weeks, and we're hoping to schedule a dedication for late March. We'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks much for all the support you guys have given this project, and especially to all the veterans who've served, and to whom this memorial will be dedicated.

Great work. I tried calling Mike this morning on the way in from Galveston was going to stop by and say hello but had no clue where I was headed.
