My nephew is 11 now and I'm amazed at the things I was allowed to do at a much younger age than he is.
I got to thinking just how strange my childhood must have been, growing up with a fishing camp. I was 6 years old and in the 1st grade when I was allowed to run my own boat by myself. Dad put a mark on the throttle with a china marker and said I wasn't allowed to go past that point. It was just short of half throttle, but I learned I could get on a plane if I put a heavy ice chest in the bow.
Mind you it was a 12 foot flat bottom with a 4.5 Evinrude. I also was not allowed to cross the bayou or go further back in the marsh than my dad could see me from the porch. Had to wear a PFD at all times, etc.
So how old were you when you were allowed to run a boat on your own?
