  • Me Generation Out in Force Saturday

My brother and I went fishing Sat because it was the only day available to us last week. I have a 17 ft center console with 90 Hp E-Tec and we were anchored in 2 ft water between two parallel reefs that are about 50 yards apart. The reefs were under water but you could see their shadows so they probably were only 6-10" deep. I looked up and saw a about a 20' center console coming straight at us at a high rate of speed. I thought surely they were going to run aground but it must have been a tunnel hull because the boat ran over both reefs missing us by about 30ft and just missing my cork. The boat never slowed a bit nor did the two young bubbas in the boat even look at us.

Now this is just half the story. About two hours later we were anchored in 5 ft of water about 10 yards off the end of a shallow underwater reef. I was casting crosswind to the end of the reef and my brother was fishing downwind behind the boat. A couple of boats had passed us but both boats respectfully veered away and passed at least 100 yds on the side opposite the reef. Then unbelievably here came a large center console that passed over the end of the reef where my cork had been, stirring up mud and then cutting my brother's leader, never slowing down or even looking at us. Now I am 82 and my brother is 70 so we don't look very menacing but the guys in those boats couldn't know that when they decided to pass that close to us at about 35 mph. We could have been two NFL linemen for all they knew. What ever happened to common sense and courtesy?

That's very disrespectful on both counts. I was hoping your second story would have some Karma attached and would
end up with the boat loosing his lower unit by hitting the shallow reef.

There were jerks in your generation , my friend , but I have to say , sadly , that consideration and respect are less common now than then .

Next time ya see em coming, reel in and see if you can land a hook in their mouth!...Just kidding, but people really don't pay attention or they just don't care. I almost got ran over in my kayak in broad daylight, the guy veered off me about 30 yards infront of me, he must have heard me screaming at him....had to change my shorts after that one.

I don't slow down for people anchored in a channel. Hopefully you weren't in or near a common boat path / lane. Not fun we've all been there.

A fist brings common sense, courtesy, consideration and respect but is only learned at an early age. Pain is still a great universal language and well understood. When the WE warriors come out its time to come in. Especially at our age.

Everyone has the right to enjoy the waters but not at the mercy or expense of anyone else.

The boat etiquette and amount of boats in Galveston bay get worse every year.

....agreed! That being said I have to send out some thanks to the two guys from Spring that were fishing the tournement that gave me a hand yesterday afternoon. Had been fishing the old Narrows just outside of Hall's Lake and got hung up. Was going to be a while before the tide came in and they were gracious enough to grab a line and get me un-stuck on the way in to weigh in their Reds. Big thanks Guys!!

...in reference to the OP. Where were you guys fishing this past weekend? I understand that you were anchored and fishing between two reefs and some "Jackwagon" ran over your lines....but I am curious where you guys were located and if it was in a heavily traversed channel.
Saw some folks anchored up in the real "Narrows" out of Hall's Bayou this past weekend....fishing the deep water in the "ditch" you have to run to get out of Hall's Lake on a really low tide.

If you are fishing there and have your lines pitched into the channel and you are soaking bait when you hear a boat exiting the Bayou and getting into the Lake you had better start reeling in as they CAN'T SLOW DOWN.

I've had to jump over the side many times to replace a prop and cotter pin back in the day with my Dad and know better than to drop off plane there.

When you are out fishing, catching or not, just take off your engine cover like you are broke down, boats well keep clear of you then.
the world is rapidly changing, and it is not for the better.

If if they come to close and don't see the engine cover off, usually if you wave for help, they will turn away.
