  • Yak Help

Ok...I am thinking about buying the Search 13 Fuzzy has for sale. Actually I was 100% sure last night, but then on the way to work this morning it hits me. How in the sam heck am I going to fit a 13' yak in the back of my truck? I don't want to get a rack on top of the truck because I don't like how that looks at all. Will it work?

Use bungies to tie it down?

Much better idea.....Get the small ratchet straps and you should be good to go!
Spray them down with Corrosion x in the red can and they will last forever!

I did get the ratchet straps and some bungies. I would rather over strap it than under strap it.

I've been using a bed extender for my 16' perception for years. I got mine at Northern Tools and Equipement. Mine has the tie down loops on the ends of the cross -tee unlike the one shown in the picture above. You can get various types of tie downs at Academy or Austin Kayaks ( old Canoe Sports ). I pass one through the kayak handles and secure to the left and right truck tie down loops and another through the left and right bed extender tie down loops running it under and over the yak and secureing. You will need to afix a kayak cushion to the cross tee of the bed extender and secure with long plastic tie downs to prevent marring the underside of the yak from vibration and bumps, or something similar. The red flag won't do at night. I was whaleing down I 45 early one morning before daylight and was pulled over by the police. He said he saw me pass and wondered what the heck was sticking out- had a red flag on the end. He said that won't do, need a light in the dark. No ticket, said take care of it. Talked fishing, nice guy. My engineer buddy rigged up trailer lights on the cross tee and I'm legal. Also,I put a bicyclists flashing red light on the rudder with some removeable clamps. That alone might be enough, I don't know. Maybe some police viewers could enlighten us. Easy to load and unload. I put most my gear in the yak the night before and with the tie down snugging down on the paddle with the gear under it and my bed cover, everything stays put. Good luck.
