  • To the kayaker this morning...

In front of Harbor Walk. You need to have a 360 degree light. I came dangerously close to never seeing you. No hat light, no reflective material etc. that's just not smart to be on the water at night without these items. I hope you stopped at academy and picked up your coast guard mandated safety items, the morning could have turned bad quick!

I run West Bay and Jones alot at night and nothing worries me more than kayakers with no lights. I have had a few close calls myself and know where your coming from. Gater

I almost hit a wader one morning. Pitch dark and no light. He was right in the cut out of the diversionary. Guarantee you he crapped his pants. I stopped the boat and he was already apologizing before I could say anything.
      Shut up and FISH!!

I went gigging with root canal a few Weeks ago I we came within 30 feet of plowing a boat with no lights on what so ever..there were several other boats just sitting out there in the dark with no lights..I shouted a few choice words at the one.. when we went back through there they were still sitting no lights

I think natural selection needs to take over..sad to say but you can't fix stupid but you sure could kill them unintentionally

I almost killed a guy one night in Titlum. Dark green kayak, no lights whatsoever. I missed him by a few feet, stopped and came back. He was cussing at me. I went VESUVIAN on him and ranted for over a minute about how stupid it was to be in the middle of a channel with no lights whatsoever. When I finally stopped yelling, he apologized. I picked him and his kayak up and brought him back to the launch. There were a lot of people out that night and I told him if he didn't die in the bayou, he'd probably die in Cold Pass. I didn't fall asleep that night until sunrise.

Mt. Vesuvius is a volcano in Italy near Pompeii. Its eruption was many times worse than Mt. St. Helens and completely buried the city and its inhabitants in ash.

                  Agreed.
I almost ran over a kayaker down at the San Bernard one morning because he paddled right in front of me with no light.
He saw me coming and deliberately tried to beat me thru a narrow opening.
Thank god I saw him in the moonlight. I shut down but still ran into him as the boat settled.
                  Scary.

Thanks Jhua for elucidating on my Vesuvius reference. I thought everyone knew about Mount Vesuvius. Basically, when you go Vesuvian, it's a huge eruption, in this case, of anger and expletives.

As a kayaker, I've put in onto the intracoastal at a spot in east Matagorda before light.
It's downright scary. I paddle like hell to get across and away from any undertow.

                      And I light up 360d.

You have to keep an eye out around the 2004 bridge. I see them out there all the time without lights. Also see a lot of small jon boats not rigged out right. These people get excited to get on the water and forget the impact a bad decision can have. We all need to be on alert for these guys they tend to show up around when there is a holiday .

I hope to never run anyone over-my night driving is usually about 30 mph and my vision kind of sucks, so PLEASE use lights!!!
