Mt. Vesuvius is a volcano in Italy near Pompeii. Its eruption was many times worse than Mt. St. Helens and completely buried the city and its inhabitants in ash.

There was quite an exhibit at MFAH several years ago. When they did their digs at that sight, there were holes that noone knew what they were. They filled the holes and dug out the mold. Mothers holding their children, dogs cowering, and other horrible spectacles. Pretty intense. If the exhibit ever comes back around, I highly recommend it.
