  • Need Resources for Handout on Dangers of Pass

I posted her some time ago about a planned trip to the area of the Pass (Treasure Island beach house rental third week in August), and, I was grateful for the several responses about how to fish the place.

Initially, the week rental was to be just me, the wife, my Aggie Son (starting junior year in Fall) and the shepherd. Now, I've learned that my Son may bring as many as 10 fellow Aggies with him for at least a day or so during the middle of our stay. All but one of them, his intended roommate at A&M this coming year) are completely unfamiliar with salt water fishing and recreation. So, I'm worried about them having free reign at the Pass.

Rather than go around lecturing the ADULTS when each one arrives I thought I'd put together a little printed presentation of the dangers of the Pass, perhaps a good map or maps of the channels and guts that make the place treacherous and also some statistics of how many drownings happen there both this year and historically. But I'm having trouble finding good material for the hand-out.

I'd like to have information like that mentioned above and also tide charts and tables, estimated current strength through the pass at its fastest while we're there, the location of rescue resources and how to contact them, the relatively aggressiveness of local law enforcement towards underage drinking (they'll not be allowed to drink at the beach house but, hey, we all know college kids) and also some recommendations of good places on the beach where the college kids can party without too much interference from others and maybe from law enforcement (I don't want to spend all my time bailing them out just for drinking a beer or two).

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

If anyone's interested I'll make the handout available here on the forum when it's done.

No glass containers allowed on any beach. No alcohol allowed on City of Galveston Beaches which includes Galveston side of SLP.

They should not wade or swim within 400 yards of either side of the pass and should limit themselves to beachfront swimming-just stay away from the pass area in general-doesn't matter what some tide chart says-it is always dangerous. Can easily stick a vehicle in the soft sand, (especially on Brazoria side). No vehicles allowed on dunes (very illegal). Have some meat tenderizer available for jellyfish stings. When swimming/playing in the surf, shuffle your feet for stingrays. Signs have been posted alerting folks to "No Swimming" at the Pass area-but off course, idiots ignore them. 4 people have drowned so far this year at the Pass.

The Police and County Sheriff are working the Galveston side pretty hard, so best for them underage kids to: 1. Not be driving if drinking anyway for many reasons; and 2. stay around the house if drinking. Costs $4 per round trip to get to Galveston Side per vehicle.

Lastly, no sheep allowed on beaches, so tell them to leave their girlfriends in the pasture.

I can make a few wade fishing trips happen for a couple of guys. If that would be something that would help out your situation.

Jerry, you are right on about the tips except the sheep part. Should I tell Donna what you said Seriously, Jerry is right about the pass, don't even get close, head down the beach a mile and have fun. By the way, have fun with all those kids hanging out

Sure, Hogie70. I'm interested in having my Son (usually a bait fisherman) and his roommate (who is always a lure fisherman) have a few hours with someone who knows what they're doing on the flats / reefs. I'll PM you.

As a current Sea Aggie and avid shark fisherman, I spend a lot of time on the beach, especially SLP. My best advice is don't get in the water unless you're down by the Point West condos. Current's strong and unpredictable. Plus the beach patrol doesn't allow swimming in the pass, especially after this summer's drownings. No offroading on the dunes and most of those trails are closed now. Big fine if you get caught on the dunes. If you're gonna drink on the beach. Buy it in a can and use a coozie and don't drive like a dumb@$$. The cops usually leave you alone if you're not causing a raucous. Please pick up your trash. They can have a good time pretty much anywhere on the beach. As far as emergency services go, call the cops if its a worthy emergency. If they're stuck there's usually people around to pull you out. You can PM me to get you out if theres no one around. I live 5 mins from the pass. For fishing, if the surf's flat just fish there. It's been good recently. That's pretty much it i guess. Hope it helps.
