  • Check This Out! Surfside 8-15-09

Wow... I woke up this morning with a smile on my face remembering the day we had yesterday, although I am so sore I can barely walk. Don't worry, you won’t hear me complaining about anything.
In light of the perfect forecast predicted for Saturday morning, we decided to do a little near shore fishing. For those of you that don’t know, I have a 14.5’ boat. Most people say I am crazy for taking it past the jetties. I beg to differ.
We stopped and picked up some fresh bait before crossing the bridge in Surfside. Spanish Sardines were our bait of choice. We managed to have the boat in the water by 5:30am, only to find out my lights wouldn’t work. After digging under the console for a bit, we found a loose wire and managed to fix the issue. We broke the Surfside jetties by 5:45am to ice cream conditions.
Our first destination was a gas rig about 3 miles offshore.

We immediately started a troll once we were close to the rig. Not even five minutes into the first troll we had two screaming runs only to end in break offs. I lost a Yozuri lure and my buddy lost a kingfish rig. I had a good feeling we were going to have a good day after that.
We ended up boating 17 Kingfish, a half dozen Spanish mackerel, a few sharks and something I would have never expected!!
I would put money on it that this is the first Mahi Mahi landed out of 14.5 Shoalwater Cat. 8) Thoughts?

The crazy thing about the catch (other than the fact we caught it within 4 miles of the beach) is that we thought we had a double hook up until we realized the fish had taken both our baits and was hooked by both hooks on each of our kingfish leaders. I thought that was pretty neat!
Here are a few pics that were taken before the fish were cleaned. I wish I hadn’t ruined my camera a few weeks ago, as we had multiple double hookups that would have made for some cool videos. All in all, it was one of the best days I have ever spent on the water. Tight lines…

Nice trip for the Shoalwater. You might want to check the TP&W guide on kingfish limits.
I work just enough to pay for my fishing habit.

Two per person over 27”, correct? If the regs haven’t changed since yesterday I am good to go… BTW, that little boat holds 4 people. Gotta love a shoalwater...

              Very nice haul!
You are one brave soul. Wouldn't catch me out there in a small boat with these storms poppin' all over the place.

The cool thing about my little cat is that it won't sink unless you hit something and crack the hull or if it flips over. I can take waves over the bow all day long and be OK. I've been there and done that.
