  • SLP?

A buddy of mine is coming down from Houston on Thursday to do some fishing. He's not hardcore so we will be soaking dead skrimps. I was thinking that SLP would be a good place to fish from the bank and drink some beers. Seems like with the NE type wind forecasted we should be protected on the Galveston side.

My question is, with the outgoing tide all afternoon, where would ya'll set up? I was thinking of either fishing right next to the bridge pilings, or going out to where the pass meets the surf. Not sure, as I've only fished the backside of SLP. Thanks for the advice!

Dead chimps and beer, I'd sit up right under the bridge to stay out of the sun. That way your beer won't get warm too fast....

I would either free line shrimp at the pass or take a cast net and free line some Mullet! On a moving tide you should be able to catch something moving through there. You have a castnet?

If you want some mullet, come to Terramar (last canal). They are all over the place right now (as I am writing this), so you could get some good bait. I am thinking they will be around every night for a few more days and even during the day.

I agree, grab a chair and drink a beer or two or three. Relax!

Yep. I'll bring it along with the bait bucket and the bubbler

Thanks for the tip, I may do that. Shouldn't there be some mullet at SLP too though?

There should be a ton of mullet down there at the pass. Shouldn't be hard to find them on the flats.

That spot gets to crowded for me. There are people everywhere there and its not they're fault, its just they really don't have anywhere else to go that is legal. Consider some rock hopping on the seawall jetties. I suppose no matter where you go this weekend, even with a boat, I'd expect to see a lot of people. (Memorial Day Weekend)
You could wait for night fall and all the hordes to leave and then go Flounder hunting...I think it is because of the daytime crowd that I am a serious gigger and don't use a rod and reel much anymore unless its ice cream, dawn patrols in the surf or taking friends to put them on the bull red run in the surf. Even then it can get a little crowded.

I'm sorry but I need to Hjack this thread for a moment. I am going to predict that this year there will be a record number of drownings recorded at SLP because of 2 main factors.
                      1) Hurricane Ike wipes out several public piers and parks.
2)Numerous, once public beaches, now barricaded and off limits to the average Joe for a few wealthy home owners
I am already beginning to see it. At the Kemah bridge area for instance, where there used to be a handfull of folks working the area. It is now truly packed. People are fishing/tresspassing @ Jennings island and for the first time I saw a BBQ grill set up under the bridge.
This lack of access is going to force more land bound anglers to seek unsafe areas like the pass or the ship channel and of coarse with that will come the unfortunate drownings.

OK. I'll step down now. Sorry for the jackment.
