  • Redfish on Da Halfshell Dis Weeken' at Blockade Runners

OK, going to be grillin' some redfish on the halfshell this Saturday at Blockade Runners. Going to get the grill hot about 6pm. The front porch is party ready, though the rest of the place is pretty rough. If you're boatless, the taxi service will be leaving the old KOA at 5:30pm. I can take y'all back after sunset.

If you've got your own boat, you can come anytime. I'm not sure yet if 007 will make it since he's got so much work going on, but I'll have at least 2 extra beds in case anyone wants to stay. We also have an air mattress that TMO supplied us with.

Sunday will be for workin'. We're going to hopefully finish the cleanup around the camp and load the boat up with the debris. We've got to get the front porch level too.

Just let me know if you're coming so I can reckon how many fillets to bring with me. Might need someone to pick up a couple pounds of shrimp for the sauce too. - Sandy

We wouldn't even have a place to put an extra air mattress But thanks for the offer.

I'm booked solid. I'm gonna have to do some tweaking of the schedule to take Bountyhunter and his buddy on the 4th.

As long as the taxi floats and does not charge me a fare, we are good to go. See you at 5:30! Remember the wife is hard core when it comes to water activities, so you will not hear any crying from her.

Don't worry, I will. She grew up on Bastrop Bayou, fished all the time with her father and grandfather, so she knows what to do. She also baits her own hook when needed and takes her own fish off. Got to love that!

Unless anyone else puts their name in the hat, looks like I'll bring 4 fillets. Pizza as a side dish? Why the heck not?!

Sure was a nice weekend, except for that thunder bumper that slammed me at 4am. Several flash-BANGS had me flying out of bed and cowering on the floor in the center of the camp saying the Lord's Prayer. I was SKEEEERED! Hail pelted the tin roof and the air was rather charged.

I arrived at the camp around 11:30 or so and got to work cleaning off more lumber. I did a little fishing too and had whiting (channel mullet) on almost every cast. A cast to my favorite spot brought a nice 18 inch red, but I tossed him back as the law prescribes. A few minutes later the game warden came roaring up. I was just sitting on the porch and as he made toward the dock, so I went out to meet him. He asked if I had a fishing license and I said, "Yes Sir. Let me go get it". He told me not to worry about it and told me to have a good day. That was the first time I ever saw a warden in Titlum. Talk about a nice boat too!

Around 5pm I headed off to pick up Explorer21 and his better half at the dock. They brought a homemade pizza which we threw on the grill and they pitched in chopping veggies and peeling shrimp and I got to cooking. Now let me tell y'all. That pizza was so good, I wasn't sure I even wanted to eat redfish . The redfish and shrimp sauce followed and we passed a good time on the porch. I brought them back at dusk and made my way back to the camp by compass and Q-Beam. Thanks for coming out y'all. I really enjoyed the company.

I spent a while working on the solar cell/battery system and got it all connected up, then I settled down on the porch to read tales of blockade runners from the days of yore. I fell asleep there after a long conversation with my dad. Sorry about not calling you back 007. It was way too late when I got off the phone. I woke up around 1am to find that I was getting chilled from the wind, so I flopped in the bed and slept well until the afforementioned thunder bumper. It was so violent I had trouble sleeping after that.

At first light I woke and fished for a while with more of the same. Whiting, croaker, and little reds. So I had a nap to make up for what I lost the night before. I finally got under the camp to get some real work done when Glen called me, broken down on the highway, so I headed off to the rescue. I secured some heavy duty ropes from a neighbor on the bayou, but by the time I got to the ramp and the trailer unhooked, he came limpin' in on his truck, the radiator spewing forth steam.

Leaving that conundrum for later we headed out and got some work done. We secured 5 of the pilings in the ground and continued the cleanup from the weekend before. Had a little excitement with some snakes, but nothing looked poisonous and we got most of the debris off of the marsh grass. My boat is absolutely overflowing with debris. I wasn't sure my poor trailer would make it home.

We took off at about 5pm and I made it home with enough daylight to cut my grass, much to the relief of my neighbors who have as of late been skulking about with expressions of disapproval on their faces. It was a good weekend, but I don't think the garbage men will like me very much come Wednesday. My only question is, why did the previous residents of our camp bring out so much rebar and then just dump it in the marsh? What could they have been thinking? A big rusty mass of sharp metal. Talk about a fun cleanup.

I kind of feel like I'm spinning my wheels out there. I thought by now we'd have a roof and be putting up walls or tearing down the other place. The weather has not been very cooperative though. At least I'm getting a bunch of the cleanup done in the meantime.

Depending on the weather, and therefore the roofing situation, the plan for this coming weekend is to finish the cleanup and continue to prepare for the roof. Another couple sets of hands and another boat and I'm certain we could do it in a day. So if anyone is up for that sort of work, make plans to come on out. I'll bring redfish again! I'd like to make a load on Saturday if I can get some help and fill up the bed of my truck.

I only took a couple of pics this weekend. Here they are. - Sandy
