  • Leader???

I always throw artificials and rarely touch natural baits but lately I have had my eyes on some BIG uglies. Its probably the fish I know the least about. So the current problem is leader material. In my experiences as of late wire spooks them, and mono and braid get shredded up in the structure commonly frequented by my intended target. So my question is what leader do you drum guys prefer fluocarbon?mono? what brand? and what pound test? any advice is much appreciated

I have pulled up over 1200lbs of black drum in 4 hours in some of my honey holes... 100LB leader made up as a single snapper drop with 8oz weight & hook all on one leader. 65lb braid on most of my jigging rods & reels, some of my smaller pitching combos have 30lb test for main line.

Get with Chip(imhammer). He caught a 50# drum Sunday on a plastic. We had to chase it with the trolling motor for a while. He is the drum expert!!

I use 40# leader-mono or flouro-whatever I have plenty of and whatever was handy. I use 20-30# mono on my reels, so yes, I'll bust line before leader. Coe does it right-hauls em in FAST-it takes me 15-30 minutes per fish. I use a egg weight (1-5 oz-depending on current), barrel swivel, then 3' of leader and a 6/0 circle hook with 1/2 crab for Buglies.

By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. I took Jhua out one day we didn't have much luck but the wind was really bad. There are a few areas I like to target which always produce. Jetties, TCD, Ship Channel etc.

Be on the look out for our 4th or 5th CPR Annual Black Drum Tournament I forget which we are on right now... (CPR= Catch, Photo, Release)

                -2 months long (Feb 3 - April 14)
                - $20 / angler (You can enter at anytime during the tournament)
                - 100% cash payout to 1st -3rd
-Color of the Week or Date Stamp on each photo is required.
-Photo must show fish w/ color of week or date stamp.
-Measurement must be taken and recorded with each fish & picture to prove the measurement is valid.

You will end up sending me 2-3 photos per fish.
If you fail to properly revive the fish or deflate it's air bladder & it dies you must not count it! If it floats away from your boat THAT'S BAD!

If I were to hook up on a fish I couldn't turn with one of my baitcaster reels I'd have to cut that sucker loose. I used to own some rigs to handle big drum but haven't fished for them in a while. I've got on big schools of reds and caught them til my hands and arms cramped. Got greedy and had to put the rod down and excuse myself with a banana and a cold beer.

I've been using 20 to 30# fluoro leader because the knots don't slip as bad. Heavy line - I like to have that crimped.
