  • Anyone tried an Ipad on a boat?

I ran across this today and it looks like it would be a good idea. The Navionics App is only $10 and a power cord can be rigged up pretty easily.

It would never last on a bay boat, especially with that mount! LOL If you can take it in and out of the case, I guarantee it would leak sooner or later!

I would worry more about how hot it would get inside of that case. Just wondered if anyone had tried it and the screen size is right up my alley. GPS manufacturers have lost touch with reality when it comes to the larger screens. $1500+ is crazy!
What unit did you settle on Ken?

We've been using one the last month or so fishing offshore and it works AMAZING. Use the free Google Earth app and you can import your own waypoints from Google Earth on your computer.

          Thanks dn17,

I downloaded the App and it sure has detailed images of West Bay. You can see the oyster boats tearing up Confederate Reef. Or maybe that's Smooth Move and Kenny trying to spook a school of trout? lol

How do you get service off shore?

The GPS function on the iPad doesn't require 3G/wifi, so it'll show your position as long as you have a clear view of the sky.

iPads have an optional 3G attena so you get the interweb through cell towers like a smart phone.

                    Thanks Reeltime,

I found this one online but it may be a rust pit.

Yep and broke it from hard hitting waves off shore.

In concept it's a great idea but I'm telling you, it would be destroyed on most bay boats. If the pounding didn't do it, the saltwater and sun would!
Built-in in a big offshore with a cutty cabin would be a slightly different story......
You'd also have to take it on & off which I've never done with my Garmin!

I haven't. I'll probably get the Garmin 541S for around $650. I really think the Lorance 5G is a better value, but I already have everything set up for Garmin. Chip reader, map chips, etc.
