  • My first tarpon!

A couple weeks ago, we took the kids to Disney, which scared the $#!# out of me with all those crowds and heat. While we were planning this trip, a buddy rented a house in Boca Grande during the same time. I was able to negotiate a little daddy time in Boca Grande before we drove over to Disney.

One morning, my buddy and I went tarpon fishing in Boca Grande Pass with Capt. Dave Markett, an original founder of GCCA in Florida. Way different kind of fishing than I've ever done with 30 boats on top of each other chasing big girls with depth finders around a bunch of caves in 40-60' of water. A couple of times, I could give guys on other boats high fives.

It took me awhile (and a bunch of ribbing from Capt. Dave) to figure out how to not try to set the hook in those steel trap mouths of theirs. Finally, I did it right and hooked into what Capt. Dave called an absolute monster for my first tarpon! He estimated her at 220 pounds. During my hour long fight, she did a lot of aerial acrobatics and took us over a mile from where I hooked her.

We took some DNA and some pictures, then let her loose. Truly incredible experience. If you guys ever head over that way, definitely look up Capt. Dave. He's a blast and knows how to put you on the fish.

    Tight lines,
    Brian

PS - Disney wasn't as bad as I expected...
