  • Opinion on Consumption Advisory

    Hello All.

I was wondering what all of your opinions were on the consumption of trout out of West Bay? I am not trying to spark a debate here, but merely wondering if it is something most of you that do a lot of catching down there think about. I only get down there a few times a year, and am due to head down at the end of March for several days of fishing. I will be joined by a large group of family and friends, which will include children, women who are pregnant, and nursing mothers. These are the people who TPWD advises NO consumption of trout.

I have eaten them in the past and never really thought too much about it. But having this crowd come down got me to thinking. I see a lot of trout being kept on this and other boards and thought I would see what all of your thoughts were.

I guess I will just have to target slot reds!

    Thanks everyone for your thoughts.

    Dave

I'm old and don't think it matters at my age and don't eat much trout or fish anyway-I give most to my parents that are 83 and 84-getting cancer at their age is the least of their worries. I would absolutely comply with the advisories if young, preggo or kids.
"Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. BEAUTIFY AMERICA, RUN OVER A LIBERAL, THEN BACK UP AND SEE IF HE'S DEAD.

It is only an advisory. The state has not actually found elevated levels of toxins in the fish since the storm. It is also only for catfish and trout. Redfish are totally fine even if the trout were contaminated. If you are concened about others, then just keep it under the 8 ounces a month!

We did a poll on this subject when the news first came out... many said they'd continue to eat trout... "Whatever doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger" was the overall feeling

Ive heard that by filleting the trout it illiminates around 90 to 95% of the toxins. Most are in the skin.

Where did you hear that from? If its true, we only have to eat 5-10% less trout than we normally would.

Are you sure it is 8oz per month? I thought I read 8oz per day.
I work just enough to pay for my fishing habit.

If that is so, then I dont think anyone has anything at all to worry about. I will double check!

Be smart about it and don't feed trout to those kids, pregnant and nursing mothers just to be Safe!! We aint bulletproof and best to be safe when involving kids, mothers and preggos.

                      From TPWD website

                      "Bay and contiguous waters
Chemicals of Concern: Dioxin and Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)

For all catfish species and spotted seatrout, adults should limit consumption to no more than one, 8-ounce meal per month.
Women who are nursing, pregnant, or who may become pregnant and children should not consume catfish or spotted seatrout from these waters."

I stand corrected. Just feed them flatties and redfish.

                            Agree

                            Robalo,

I totally agree. I would never take chances with those folks, especially since they include my wife and daughter. I am just wondering what everybody else does, and if their hair falls out after they eat trout!

I would like to eat some myself, that is IF I catch some! But, just to be clear, I would never knowingly serve anything potentially harmful to Moms and Li'l ones.
