Ahoy,
I'm new here...first time poster, long time reader. I read this forum mostly with envy, since I'm up in the cool hinterlands of Dallas and my husband and I don't get down to the coast nearly enough. When we do, though, we love to fish. The problem is, since we aren't down there that often and neither of us are hardcore anglers (although he probably approaches this characterization more than me) we almost always go fishing blind -- don't know what bait to use or where. Usually just throw some fresh dead in a pocket and wade to the last cut. We aren't looking for trophies, exactly, although that always makes it more fun. Our last trip in October, we pulled everything imaginable out of the surf (a spec, red, Spanish mac, a pufferfish, sheepshead, etc.) We just like to catch fish, although, I'll admit -- croaker after croaker can be pretty anti-climatic after awhile.
We will be down that way in about a week for a week. We're staying over in Quintana and we love to surf fish. The little place we're staying is right on the beach and I imagine we will spend a lot of time fishing there, for convenience's sake. Where else would you guys suggest? No boat, by the way, and needs to be accessible by a Tahoe or feet.
FWIW, we both have lived variously in Houston and parts south, so we do have some familiarity with the area and, eventually, we'd like to move back down to the coast. So, yeah, we're tourists, but we're tourists who want to be locals.
Great forum -- so thrilled to have found it!
