  • New Here - What's a Girl To Do?

    Ahoy,

I'm new here...first time poster, long time reader. I read this forum mostly with envy, since I'm up in the cool hinterlands of Dallas and my husband and I don't get down to the coast nearly enough. When we do, though, we love to fish. The problem is, since we aren't down there that often and neither of us are hardcore anglers (although he probably approaches this characterization more than me) we almost always go fishing blind -- don't know what bait to use or where. Usually just throw some fresh dead in a pocket and wade to the last cut. We aren't looking for trophies, exactly, although that always makes it more fun. Our last trip in October, we pulled everything imaginable out of the surf (a spec, red, Spanish mac, a pufferfish, sheepshead, etc.) We just like to catch fish, although, I'll admit -- croaker after croaker can be pretty anti-climatic after awhile.

We will be down that way in about a week for a week. We're staying over in Quintana and we love to surf fish. The little place we're staying is right on the beach and I imagine we will spend a lot of time fishing there, for convenience's sake. Where else would you guys suggest? No boat, by the way, and needs to be accessible by a Tahoe or feet.

FWIW, we both have lived variously in Houston and parts south, so we do have some familiarity with the area and, eventually, we'd like to move back down to the coast. So, yeah, we're tourists, but we're tourists who want to be locals.

Great forum -- so thrilled to have found it!

Welcome aboard!! Enoy!! I would head to the Mouth of the Brazos and fish the river. You can try under the HWY 36 at night sometimes.

                          Welcome!

This time of year I would target sheephead like Ibtsoom recommended. Hit up either the Quintana or Surfside jetties since both are right there. Depending on the wind the gulf side of one will be calmer, or if it is too rough on either side choose the better channel side.

Get yourself a bait bucket with a battery powered air pump, and buy live shrimp from one of the bait camps on the N. side of the big bridge.

Fish them on small hooks (I use a size 8 trebel), under a cork with a split shot. As far as corks, you will see others using popping corks, but for this, any float will work. You will defienently look like a tourist if you use the classic red/white bobber though

Drift the rig by walking with it as it floats down the rocks. Don't be too scared to let it get close, the fish are right on the structure. Bring plenty of extra tackle. If the fish aren't shallow, try fishing on the rocks deeper.

Another option is to wade fish X-mas bay. Walk in either at the big cell tower, or the condos further down. Throw some gulp on a jighead or a topwater and get there early.

                          Good luck!
