Just a heads up before you make the run....So we decided to duck out of the wind and head back to the canals between Caranchua and Alligator Point. We get over there and in the main canal, about 75 yards back there was installed a barricade all the way across so apparently you can no longer access the back part, unless you enter through Karankawa Lake, and the smaller lake that was breached during Ike. This is F***ed up ...anyone know who did this and if it's legal? I was wondering if Army Corps had their hands in it, or was it the Karankawa duck guys. Man this sucks as that USED to be one of my favorite places to drift in colder months when it was windy.

I've been fishing back there for years and a winter early Spring bite, if your looking for bait it's the spot on a hard day. Although size usually isn't the best(my personal of 24") a friend and his son scored a 28" oneday...so it happens. Hopefully your right about the temporary thing. Quickest way around would be inb a straight line and they can drive a pole down in one they damn sure can pull it out. I'll keep my fingers crossed. As long as that breach is still in the wall from the small pond to the canal, you can probably access thru Caranchua Lake. Might try it next week!

I had heard that the barrier had been installed and had seen them machinery working over there. That has been a pretty good winter spot over the years. I hope that the intention is to secure what's behind that levee. From what I can tell you that was a dump site back in the 50's, and we don't want what's there to get out.

Now form another perspective, it will reduce the traffic that gets into Carancahua lake. That won't hurt my feelings any. Would be interesting to find out who is doing the work. I doubt seriously that Hall's Bayou Hunting club has that kind of money. Probably state or entities that are responsible for the dump site.

I guarantee you its HBR! Are we talking the outflow that comes into the North part of Karankawa Lake or are we talking the barge lake just west of there that also access Karankawa on the West side?

Old barge channel just west Coe. If anything it'll increase traffic if people are trying to get in there, but it'll only be flats/ shallow runners that get in because you'd have to clear the smaller duck pond that the HBR guys use. Those pits used to be a shrimp farm I was told Steve, but that could be wrong. Ton of wildlife live around them...migratory birds, otters, yotes, bobcats,hogs, are just a few I've seen above ground hanging around there...sure sign nothing is bad in them.

From what I read here I think no that it is the other side. You can still get there but you would have to run through the lake and that smaller lake is aweful skinny in the winter. Now I'm curious as hell to find out what is going on back there...

Your last statement is spot on...and yes, it is very very skinny on a low.

I may be way off base on that comment, but I fished with a customer years ago who had worked with the core of engineers and had lots of information about varioius things around the bay. someone older than the two of us could probably shed some light. Not too many reasons to build up a levee that size, other than keeping something in or out..

I know that there is tons of wildlife in that area for sure. There is also a pipeline that runs through as well. I will ask around some of the old timers and see if I can come up with an answer.
