Bird Spikes for gulls and pigeons

Has anyone used these before to keep the birds out? Thinking of buying about ten feet of the stuff but don't want to waste my money. In the past I used to grease the boards they would sit on and that worked as they hate grease but I kept having to redo. Any other ideas out there that won't get me arrested?

They sell the stuff in caulking tubes that you would use like the grease. Not sure how long it would last before having to reapply. I saw some recently at the JB hardware.

Fishing line and nails to keep them out of the rafters 4" x 4" holes my neighbor did it and kept gulls and sparrows out
