My buddy Cole and I decided to take the yak out of bayou vista late yesterday and decided to tie up to the train tracks and fish the little jetty. Never the one to stand still, I decided to walk along the tracks to see what there was to see... At about 6 PM the train started whistlin' and I decided to get back to the yak to watch MNF. Walking along the side of the tracks with my LED head lamp lighting the way, a HUGE rattler is coiled up against the steel track comes into the FOV of my lamp at about 3 feet. Stopped dead in my tracks (along the tracks), the thing tightens up its coil, raises its head with its fangs out and looks at me. As I'm standing there, I think we were both confused, trying to assess the situation: Me looking at a big fat, diamond back 3 feet away from me (thats not rattling) and it trying to figure out what my heat signature is (prob little to no heat signature coming from a gore-tex chest waiters and bright ARS round ball of heat 6 ft up in the air) and wondering whether to rattle or not.
The Mexican stand-off lasted no more than 3 seconds, I said a few choice words, backed up and walked around it. When I got back to the yak (10 ft past the encounter) I looked back at the snake and it was already stretched out, on its way towards us. The rattler was no less than 5 ft. and biiiig. Needless to say, we got the F)(*&)(*& out of there.
The part that is really unnerving is that 5 minutes hadn't passed since I walked that same path. So I either walked over it or right by it as it was taking in heat from the metal track or it was cruising across the tracks and we happen to run into each other.
Either way... it would have been a MNF ruiner.
BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!
