  • Coal in Matagorda

Not sure if you have seen this yet!

As much as some of you like to fish in Matagorda, you’d be doing yourselves a real disservice if you haven’t signed up on the website and sent comments to TCEQ and Matagorda county officials to keep this coal plant off the Colorado river…it only takes a few minutes…here is the link to the website – do it!!! And forward to your friends! http://nocoalcoalition.org/

There is a very knowledgeable discussion on that other fishing site. With great respect for this site, I'm not posting the link. Before jousting at that windmill, it might be a nice thing to click over there and read an informed, civilized debate on the topic.

What would it hurt? I don't know much about this type of method... Will mess up the fishing?

Where were the "Greens" when Bay City STNP got put in? Dang close to Mat bay and if it ever leaks, we get 3 eyed flounder! Seems like another "green" bandwagon. I aint heard big Al Gore's side-oops, he's busy getting a massage.

Put enough scrubbers on its emissions and it aint the worse power generation to have. Gotta have "Eeee-Lect-Tric-City" to power your POS Prius and "Gummint Motors" new "Volt" after all.

They plan to suck water out of the Colorado River (including anything else that gets sucked in) and discharge it as warmer water. It dang sure can't do any good. If it was a closed loop system, I wouldn't care about it.

With all the abudance of natural gas why screw around w/ a coal plant anyway?

They need to burn MORE gas so the prices will get out of the pits and we can all start having a good time again....

where are the traders when you need them? in jail i guess dammmit.

So the old HL&P San Leon Gas Fueled power plant and the HLP Trinity plant screw up fishing? My buddy has a 30" trout hanging on his wall he caught in March (1980s) off the bank at the discharge of the old San Leon Plant. He nailed a 8.5 almost exactly 1 year to the date at same spot as he did the 10.5#er and we fished there with our old Amb. 5000's with line freezing on the spool nailing the trout. Also, didn't last year's freeze kill thousands of trout, reds and snook in the river and Caney Creek, so I'm thinking (right or wrong) that warm water discharge has been my friend for fishing. Just saying, I think some "green" BS is being brought forth again. Also, with the newer emission standards required for coal plants, I aint so sure that emissions are as bad as older plants is a true/valid reason today to oppose a coal plant (that the emissions are deadly-well, yes, they are, but when I drive by the Fayette power plant, the surrounding ranches aint littered with dead trees and cattle). Plus bass fishing at Fayette Power plant and Gibbons Creek is pretty darn good.

I would prefer to see San Leon brought back online and more peaker plants running before new plants.

You are talking about a much smaller volume of available water in the river, apples vs. oranges... I own property down there and I'm against it unlees it is a closed loop system. Everyone else I know down there is against it as well. There was no freeze fish kill up the river. It's on average around 14' deep. I don't know about Caney.

                  Here is some more information!

Hold control and click on the link below to see what White Stallion wants to dump into the Colorado river, and subsequently east and west Matagorda bays, and the surf…not to mention, more importantly, sucking a huge amount of fresh water out of the river that the bays need…it’s aluminum, arsenic, mercury, and every other heavy metal you can think of, plus benzene and about 20-30 chemicals I couldn’t even begin to identify…I don’t care what the concentrations are… Please don’t be passive about this issue – take some time to begin writing e-mails to your friends and family and asking them to sign the petition and send comments to officials. We won’t get the chance to act AFTER THE FACT…it’s now or never. The link to the No Coal website is below as well – pls fwd it! THANK YOU!!

Ok. I just thought it was another BS "green" issue. Not trying to be a bigger azz than I am.

                    thanks.

Not many people less "Green" than me brother...LOL The only green thing I own is a 4wd Green Z-71 Suburban. 8-15 million gallons (depending on who you ask) of water a day exchanged from that river is a significant amount. Especially when you consider what all comes out of the return flow.

Oh, I think this is in reference to the White Stallion Coal thing. I've seen many signs against this project since I've been traveling from JB to CC in the last month. Meant to look that up.

A lot of people have forgotten about the STX Energy Plant. I know I did. BTW, I am not against it. There are many of these plants all over the US. They try and stay WAY out of the spot light. I think that with all of the new regs on electric generation with coal, its probably expensive to operate. Here in Portland Texas, wind is a HUGE industry. Just wish they wouldnt look like propellers. I know, its probably the best way to go, but its not all that attractive.
