Today was probably the most magnificent day of fishing that I have had here. I went out early in the morning to find tarpon crashing bait in the front yard. I remembered that I rigged up a Vincent "hat cam" a while back. This morning looked like the time for it.
I came back up, got the cam and headed back to the water. I got a few videos before the camera battery died. I have only had time to upload one - and it took all day. In this video, just about everything that can go wrong does.
Early on (at 0:31 in the video) I hook into a nice poon - with my drag loose on the reel. He runs hard enough to put a birdnest on my reel. Somehow, I manage to keep the fish on and untangle.
Later, when I attempt to land the fish by taking the leader in hand, I wind up with a fish that has not run out of gas and with my fly line wrapped around my rod.
I miraculously recover that, only to get the fish right to the edge of the water when my knot at the fly fails.
I had more fun with tarpon after this one, but this is the only video with a fish on. Well - actually - there is another video that has a brief hookup, but I will have to upload it tonight.
Then, this afternoon, I decided to just go out and noodle around right in the yard with my 7'6" 6wt. I had a blast. I must have landed 50 fish - none very large, but the action was non-stop. Mostly blue runner and spanish mackeral. A visitor walked up and was fascinated. I handed him the rod and let him land a half dozen or so.
