As written by Msaddicted... Happy Birthday Kaylin
Thursday, we had the pleasure of fishing with our friends from Midcoast Products, Lane Tekyl and Glynn Walling as well as Captains Jerry Boaen and Jim Edenfield of Bendarod Fishing Charters from Savannah GA. Jerry and Jim professionally fish many redfish tournaments and were in town to visit their very first sponsor (Midcoast Products!) and find some Texas redfish. Thomas and I had been hearing about these two guys from Lane and Glynn for some time now so it was great to finally meet them in person.
Our guests arrived well before daybreak and we loaded up the Mosca. 6 plus gear is quite a bit to take on the boat but since we were planning to make a short run and then pile out to wadefish, we elected not to split up into two boats. Not a lot of wadefishing goes on in GA where they have 8 foot tides so this was going to be a new adventure for Jerry and Jim.
We motored to our first wading spot and split into two groups of three. We loaded everyone up with topwaters and Thomas dropped me off with Glynn and Jerry and then went down a little farther to wade with Lane and Jim. It looked promising but we didn’t find any monster reds. We did find a nice trout bite and quite a few ladyfish but that wasn’t what we were after.
Thomas gathered us all up and we headed to a different shoreline spot to try it again, this time with spoons and spinners with killer flats minnows on them. We found a few more reds but nothing with much size to it. Ok, time for plan C. We all piled in the boat, had a snack and headed across the bay. The wind was up a bit and the waves rocking and rolling but its not like we were dry anyway. We headed for a nice quite cove and wadefishing round 3.
So, this was where the fish were hiding! After telling the guys how the cove worked, we loaded up with Texas Tackle Factory killer flats minnows and hackberry hustlers and we all hit the water. This is a cove that can be waded in any direction without regard to the shoreline so we kind of paired up and all went different ways. It didn’t take long.
Those TTF plastics proved to be the ticket. The reds wanted them worked slow on the bottom and the trout wanted them hopped but not fast. I was using killer flats minnows in east beast and also pumpkinseed and both those colors were quite successful. All of us started catching reds and trout and in about 2 hours time we figured we had about 50 slot reds with several more undersized. We didn’t keep track of the trout but they were mostly small. Jerry and Jim both caught Texas redfish and had a great time. These two guys were a hoot and they kept us entertained with constantly ribbing each other and making little bets on who could catch the biggest this or that.
Unfortunately, we had to go in at about 2 since Thomas and I had a captains meeting to go to for the HT cup over the next two days. We had a ball fishing with the guys and if we get to Georgia we will sure look up Bendarod Charters and go out with Jerry and Jim on their home waters! It was a fun and fish filled birthday for me J
