  • New one on the fly

I hit one of the west bay marshes this morning at sunup. I missed the first red that hit - had him on by surprise. I was casting over a thick grassy bottom and had decided to move on. Had the fly rod up vertical reeling in the line when the sucker hit. He was on the reel from the get-go, but having the rod so far back when he hit, it was impossible to get a strong hook set. He took a short run at me and I knew what was coming next - empty line. I could hear Chris Phillips laughing at me from above for failing to set the hook.

Anyway - I decided to move over along a bank that had some shrimp action going on. Immediately - fish on. And it ran well. The few glimpses I got before the fish was close in looked like a trout? There are not trout way back up in here!

    No trout....

First mullet that I have ever landed on a fly. The peach rain spoon is something else!

Left that spot and went all the way to the back of the marsh, where there is a small gut. That's where the redfish were.

Great fishing Walker. I'll pay for 1/2 of it if you can get CM to mount the mullet. I agree entirely the peach rain spoon is a great west bay marsh fly and one of my favorites. Hope to see you out there some day.

Wound up with 3 - all released. Water clarity varied - but was very stained to muddy where I caught the reds.

Man, why did I give my fly rod away? I woulda fried up that mullet. That's awesome Wahkah! When you headed back to the island? I'll be back in the classroom Monday, longing for pics from Anegada.
