I just remembered a few years ago there was a fella that fell victim to it at crystal beach...just always trying to stay up to date. Has anyone heard of any cases this season ? I haven't....

You will live... Suck it up Homey... LOL The bays have always been full of bacteria... The surf I doubt it very seriously... It doesn't have the right ingredients for the bacteria in the surf...We are West End Anglers, a saltwater tribe!

One of the earliest cases of vibrio I remember was a Dentist I believe, that got it from a seaweed scratch they think, wading the surf at the pass. He died several days later.Originally posted by 007 View PostThink about it....surf water is exposed to the open Gulf at all times and on the other hand, you have to factor in all of the stagnant back lake water that doesn't circulate as much with the tides. The water gets hotter and is more likely to be a breeding ground for bacteria......just sayin'..."GET OFF MY REEF!"

I'd have to say that most people that either get stricken or die from it have a sub-par immune system....either the elderly like yourself or someone that has a low white cell blood count.Originally posted by kenny View PostOne of the earliest cases of vibrio I remember was a Dentist I believe, that got it from a seaweed scratch they think, wading the surf at the pass. Ok I have posted the pic of what vibrio can do. There are diferent strains of it. It is more prodominent in the bay system as it is more likely to exist when the water is above 80 degrees. As ar as neosporin, bleach, alcohol. Please realize that your are dealing with a "bacteria". I would just lay the ground work and ask you when you go into surgery to be cut on what do the surgeons use to prevent inection? Answer some type of iodine wash. reason Iodine kills micro organisms that cause infections which alchohol and others dont. So get you some Betadine or other iodine based wash to clean the wound with. Dont get me wrong if you dont have iodine use whatever including soap or like Marsh rat does he uses Off!! But clean it and watch it and if it gets worse go to the hospital as I suggested herman at the medical center. I will get the doctors name that saved the Legend. This chit is for real bay or surf just pay attention to your body and get help if you think it might be infected!!Bacon Bacon Bacon!!!

Seriously, my finger cuts often do the same thing. Just keep it clean and if it starts to get worse, see a doc.
My friend the "Legend" made the decision within 4 hrs after seeing the doc and went to Herman Hospiital that 4 hrs was his knuckle to elbow 4 hours earlier he would have had the "back of his hand skinned". Four hours later and he would of had his arm cut off. If you think this cant happen to you think again!!! Be safe!Bacon Bacon Bacon!!!

Vibrio
There are several types of this from what I understand. The most deaths caused by vibrio bacteria is from eating contaminated shellfish such as raw oysters. You can get vibrio just as easily on the beach as in the bay.
Vibrio thrives in warm saltwater and the bacteria has to have saltwater to survive. I believe the best treatment would be bleach and rubbing alcohol.
