  • Just a survey...... Feel free to toss your two cents in!

I may be coming in to a small 2007 mercury 25hp tiller steer motor. The seller says it went through Ike and didn't come out so well, so she took it to a mechanic and he told her that nothing In the motor is siezed up and it just needs to be cleaned out. My question to all of you is if I get the engine how much could I sell it for running? Or if I couldn't fix it how much could I get for it not running?

Let the two cents throwing around begin
    thanks

My experience... and then you can decide.
My power washer and my generator were under water and upside down during Ike. "Things" don't start corroding if completely submerged until they have been in there a while, but the corrosion starts the minute air hits them when the water goes down or you pull them from the canal.

When we pulled them both up from the canal after we were allowed to go back to our houses weeks later, we decided to let the generator pass in peace... way too much electronics to try and save but the power washer we saved.

Rinsed everything off inside and out. Opened the gas tank, oil reservoir, spark plug... drained everything, poured oil in everything, turned the engine over and emptied the oil, repeat until he oil was clean. Took three or four times. That's the power washer we used to clean up after the storm. Worked great but you can see surface rust (only say this if you are thinking re-sale) and little issues had to be dealt with (mainly the needle valve in the carb clogged after we used it for clean up and it sat a while. A few wires had to be changed. To me the rule of thumb is how simple is the motor? If it has a lot of electronics on it then it may cost you more than it's worth but if it's a simple design you may get away with it if it wasn't in the air too long before someone flushed it out. If they took too long it may be bad enough to cause scoring and just a matter of time before it goes.

      Just my thoughts.

Are you looking to buy a motor, or is this one just a really good deal? I waited 8 months to finally find the one that I just put on the boat. There's good deals out there on running motors, you just have to do some searching and you'll find what yor're looking for and for the price that you wato to spend.

My 2 and a half cents - if you buy it, buy it dirt cheap like a few hundred bucks. That way if the engine is corroded - which you can't tell without a near total tear-down - you're only out a few clams. It took about a year or two after Hurricane Dolly for my partially submerged stuff to seize up and die. Somehow, it pits the bearings and stuff.

That said, a nice tiller motor is a blast, love to have it for messing around the bay myself.

if you can get it for $200 it might be worth trying.. .If not, walk away

Ive messed with 5 motors since ike and only one was able to get it running and keep it running. The rest were boat anchors

Make sure it has a title ..... nothing would be worse than a guy finding a stolen motor and trying to sell it to you ....

I'd walk away from the deal entirely. It sounds to me like a headache waiting to happen. If you're looking for a deal on a tiller 25, keep your eye on Craigslist. You should be able to find a good one for less than $500, which is probably the amount you will end up spending trying to get this one right. If you are hell bent to acquire this motor, I woudn't pay more than $50.
