This sucks!! Us having to worry about how to defend ourselves while fishing. I always go to SLP by boat, and have never walked in. I always have a pistol in my console, just in case.
Why put off doing something today, when you can do it again tomorrow. LIKE FISHING!!

I have never had an issue out at SLP. I'm always in a big group and if you surround yourself in numbers its always better than being solo. Its good to always bring a friend etc. if something happens while fishing at least someone is in the area to aid you should you get hit by a stingray etc (or worse)

I heard last night that a member of the coast guard was the one that got shot.

There is more to this story than the media is telling us.
I'd bet money its not even an actual criminal shooting. Probably some Doophi fooling around trying to twirl his shootin' iron on his finger and shot himself.
Or an even more likely scenario involves alcohol.
The "victim" is probably the brother-in-law of the guy who got attacked by the hogs at SLP. Too bad he didn't have his trusty flounder gig handy.

Wading with a...ahem..."personal protection device" can be done but you'll need to take a few precautions.
1.) Waterproof the ammunition by buying and applying primer sealant to the primer AND bullet/case mouth. Military grade ammo already has this but commercial doesn't.
2.)Go with a revolver. Ruger revolvers are the only 100% stainless steel "personal protection device" that I'm aware of. Most of the others have at least a couple of carbon steel mini parts in them so rust/corrosion would be an immediate issue.
Pick a model that doesn't have adjustable sights.
3.) Carry the thing in a heavy ziplock type bag. This will slow bringing it into action but sand in the lockwork is no bueno.

            Good luck.

Thanks Plugger and Eric; I didn't know that Ruger was the only stainless revolver that was 100% stainless; plus its also 100% American made. So I guess I will re-buy one of the pistols I sold in 1992 that being a Ruger (K something or other) .38 Special. Does anyone know if Ruger makes a stainless model that is hammerless?

You Rambos are getting a little nuts talking about wading with a firearm.....I'd just fish somewhere else if you're that worried or it's that dangerous.
                It's only fishing!!

All else fails...carry your phone and call the Brazoria or Galveston County Sheriffs department. Have it on speed dial to save time. Just a thought!

If you don't carry, bring your gigging stick! Some protection is better than no protection.

I’ve seen unsavory people parting under the bridge before where you see the graffiti. They have covered controlling spot right by the entry, SLP is the county line... just send a spotter down the road for the look out and then whatever. Just like some spots in Houston or anywhere for that matter, it doesn’t make me pack a gun everywhere. Just arm your self with awareness and good sense to stay out and away from that environment or get one of these gigging sticks that are so deadly you can kill a couple wild hogs with no problem. If they aren’t hunting or fishing there probably stealing and dealing.
