  • Tell me ab Hurricane preparedness

I've been on the island for about 6 months so im basically clueless ab this stuff. If something were to happen i have a friends place in houston that I could stay at but after seeing pictures of I-45 during evac im not sure thats a viable option. Any thoughts would be appreciated

I was in Conroe while the eye of IKE passed through and that was ok. The problem is the lack of services and power. If the ground has been saturated with water due to prior rain storms before the hurricane theres more flooding.

Enough wood to board up the windows. Move everything higher. Leave early!!

Leave early, leave nothing below main floor, take all items of importance, turn off gas, do not listen to the idiotic mayor or GCC-they may kill you!! Take all income tax stuff-the IRS is messing with my GF for her lost records and charging interest and penalties for requested back-up to her return. Leave your wife, M-I-L or whoever else you don't like in the house. Make sure you print out your tax statement and have a recent water bill receipt-it will help you get back on at roadblocks/check stations. If ya got a truck, take your generator and at least 20 gallons of gas because lots of Houston was w/o power also, coolers for foodstuff, clean and empty your fridge and freezer!! Those were pretty dang gross. Move all loose stuff (patio crapola) inside. Turn off water and cut power.

Then watch Lyda Ann (thank goodness she's done) and Steve LeBlanc and rest of GCC live in luxury at SLP Resort, charging up prime rib and drinks.
"Hey Hillary, regarding the Benghazi Attack on 9/11-we'll just blame it on that movie, not my total lack of security. By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. BEAUTIFY AMERICA, RUN OVER A LIBERAL, THEN BACK UP AND SEE IF HE'S DEAD.

Take plenty of pictures of what you have and uplaod them to a storage location to show the insurance later. You might come back to just a slab

I study the forecasts real good and try to make the call before the evac order goes out. Even a Cat-2 hurricane can really bust things up. There's an old joke that everyone from the greater Houston area has to move to Katy, or they can arrest ya, LOL.

If the storm hits Cat-1 or the center will miss the area, I'd stay if possible. For this you definitely need a generator, lots of extension cord, fuel, propane, water, duct tape, plywood, battery rechargable screw gun, chainsaw, boots, skeeter repellent, good flashlights, lots of food that won't spoil, and I usually have a "ditch bag" with all my important papers ready to go in case you have to cut and run. If you have pets, that's a big concern too. Oh and if you need meds, fill them way ahead of time and don't forget your insurance card if you hit the road (we did that once, not good).

So if a Big One is coming, get out ahead of the rest. Otherwise, in small cyclones like a tropical storm, we've had some legendary fun hurricane parties. Yep, if you're a drinker be sure to stock up good - it gets boring with the power off, and often no computer. Books help, but you can't beat a gasoline powered margarita blender.

What he said. Go buy your plywood now while there is plenty at the lumber store and cut all your sheets to fit your windows. Make sure you have the clips and everything. Label the boards with a sharpie or paint so you know which board fits into each corresponding window. Put em in storage and when there is a hurricane threat, you can slap your boards up and get the hell out of dodge while everyone else is going to all go out at the same time and try to buy plywood! In short, just plan ahead.

Don't leave anything on the 1st floor that you may want to keep. If its on the first floor consider it trash!

6' during Ike and we should have removed WAY more but just didn't... It's hard doing it all but next time I'm taking everything. We were lucky our walls didn't 100% give way so the house was still together (1st floor) but others weren't so lucky entire 1st floor was wiped out across the Island.

Beer and peanuts... You can live on them for weeks. LOL

                      Ok, seriously...

The most important thing you can do is have extra CASH, Gas and please take lots of pics before you leave just in case.

We know from first hand experience that your insurance company is going to do all the can to screw you out of any claims... PERIOD

I've been through many tropical storms here and one hurricane at SPI. For a hurricane I load plastic tubs and ice chests with stuff I want to keep. I put all that in the boat & truck to take to my shop in Houston.
I've boarded up twice in 16 years....Rita & Ike. Insurance will probably screw you no matter what you do, so I just board up the front & sides. I'm not even sure if that does any good. If a tornado takes it all I don't care what you've done... it's gone!
People that build out their downstairs are just stupid IMO
