  • Newbie to Galveston Bay Fishing, Help

Fellow fishermen, I do most of my fishing in and around Port O'Connor, but my son recently bought a property in Terramar and has asked that I truck my boat down there occasionally for fishing, which is fine, but I don't know my __ss from my hat about fishing in Galveston Bay, much less out of Terramar.

If you can help me, I'd appreciate any thoughts on best places for bait and fuel from that area, and shallow spots to look out for coming out of Terrmar. My son has 0 experience in the area, and while I've run aground plenty of times in POC, I'd like to avoid doing it, at least in water less than a 1 1\2 feet deep.

Not asking for your favorite fishing holes, but some general info on where to head would be nice.

    Thanks

Be very careful in West Bay.....if you have a GPS with the navionics chip, you should be able to navigate it OK. You can get bait at several places locally. I am not sure if JT has bait yet in Sea Isle, but if not, he will soon and is a member of the board. Stay away from the pass unless you are with someone who knows it. It has changed since IKE.
All the S Shoreline coves hold fish this time of year as well as the mid bay reefs.
    Good luck and welcome.

Whew, gas-Sea isle marina soon. Bait-Sea isle Marina. West towards San Luis Pass-YOU will run aground. East past Sea Isle YOU will run aground.

I suggest you hire a guide such as Aqua Pimp-a/k/a Capyt. Greg Francis and tell him that you want a learning trip, with fishing secondary. Lots of reefs to east, flats to west. Do you have a newer GPS with a 'chip"? If so, turn it on and start looking at depth contours and distances to reefs/islands and get a genarl familarization to area. get a hooksetter map and study it also.

By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. The main reefs you need to be concerned about in West Bay is Carranchua & Confederates. Carranchua runs pretty much N to S in front of Jamaica Beach. Confederates protects the OLD ICW and is marked somewhat by the old pilings that still mark the old channel. A Hot Spots map is like GOLD for West Bay. Study it as others have mentioned.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a Garmin that is about 5 years old, and probably need to upgrade and sounds like it would be well to do that. I'm glad I asked about the shallows, and really appreciate the warnings. I'm going to take that advice on a learning trip with a guide. Buying bait always seems to vary from one location to another. In the summer here, and allowing that we can get to the surf, croaker is the primary bait for trout. Always plenty of them, and shrimp are ordinarily not a problem. In some other areas I've fished toward Rockport, Corpus and down to the LM, finding croaker can be very difficult and the shrimp are very small and expensive.

          Appreciate all the responses.

Thanks, I wrote Greg an email asking him to get with me. On the other, have no clue how to send a pm on this site, but that would be great.
