        Shad

That is a Gizzard Shad not to be confused with the Shad/Menhadden we see in the bays during the summer. They are more popular in freshwater lakes but can tolerate saltwater. They can get to be pretty good size as capt. Clint mentioned. I have caught a few in the cast net that would go 15-16 inches if not bigger. Whole they make good Shark bait, in a food processor they make great dog food! Gater

X10 on Gizzard Shad. Good Tarpon bait and shark bait.

We catch ones almost that big in the Brazos before we go offshore with the castnet. You can get them as big as your hand and load the boat for a couple minutes. The only problem is that half of them die before you get out there.

I actually like them better dead for the kingfish. Throw them out there with a steel leader and no weight so they just float. Then throw a few out there to chum up the water and hold on to that trout rod with 14# test!!

Why do half of them die? Are there too many for the livewell? No oxygen? I'd love to get my hands on some good Amberjack bait... Nothing like dropping down a whole blue runner or BIG shad and wait for a bottom dweller to pounce on it
