  • How Many Crab Traps....

can you get on a 17 foot boat??? answer.... at least 23.

Took the family out today to round up traps. I started in the Diversionary and the plan was to make my way down to Karankawa start there.. back down the bay to Greens and then to Fat boys to dump off whatever we found. I couldn't even pick up all of the ones in Karankawa... If anyone goes out tomorrow there are at least 6 or 8 left that I could see to the right as you enter the lake. We squeezed 23 onto my boat. Probably could have gotten a few more on there but the family had to have a place to sit. We released countless blue crabs and small sheepshead -- only a hand full of stoneys. I piled em all at the abandoned crab trap sign at Fat boys and spent the rest of the day trying to get my boat back to some state of cleanliness. If the weather holds out we'll be back out there at least one more time before it's over.

You should get the award for "most traps in a 17' boat". Very impressive and a good lesson on stewardship of the environment for the kids. Thanks!

Thanks guys! The kids were determined that we weren't going to leave any! They were really upset when I said we had to go. I had to promise them we'd go back and get the rest later. We'll be at it again before it's over.

My wife just asked a good question. Since folks pick up traps from local bays every year, year after year, where do the new ones come from? Are they commercial crabber traps mostly, and if so why do they just abandon them?

They probably get pushed up into the marsh and they just don't care about them anymore. It would be less trouble to get a new trap and set it than to go try and retrieve the old ones.

                          Just a guess.
