Who saw the 10 part mini series that originally aired back in 2000 / 2001? I remember watching it and never missing an episode...

A new mini series entitled "The Pacific" is coming out March 14th depicting the horror that soldiers faced while fighting their way towards Japan.

Should be good I've seen some advertisements on HBO.

I watched every one. I remember one night it was supposed to come on, but didn't. That was September 11, 2001.

IMO Band of Brothers is the best WW2 film ever made.
          Have the set on DVD.
Even the Mrs. watched it and enjoyed it. And this is a woman who won't sit thru 5 minutes of ANY war film.
I certainly hope the new film does justice to the pacific war.
I've always hoped they would make a film about the pacific fighting showing just how brutal and terrible it really was.

Thanks for the heads up on the "Pacific" release. One can only hope it was at least as good as Band of Brothers.

Y'all ever see The Thin Red Line? It had all the possibilities of being a great Pacific war movie following on the heels of Saving Private Ryan. It was so bad.

Yes I saw The Thin Red Line. It was MAJOR svck.
Saving Private Ryan was pretty good. The first 10 minutes is awesome.

Stupid sh!t movies like Pearl Harbor and Inglorious Bastards do not even rate a mention.

There is a boat load of good WW2.

                Some of my favs:

                A Walk in the Sun

                Battleground

                Das Boot

                The Winter War

                Kelley's Hero's !!!! LOL

                  Thin Red Line = Horrible

                  Saving Private Ryan was okay

I liked Enemy @ the Gates but its the only movie I've seen recently or know of that depicts the Russian & Germans - Didn't care to much for the romance and bs but you have to have it to make it in Hollywood I guess.

U-571 was pretty good I love WWII sub novel / movies.

Sandy did you ever read Peter Maas - The Terrible Hours?

Never read that Coe. Most of my reading since 2004 has been confined to Texas History, American History from colonization through "Reconstruction", and Scottish history. If you want to see some good Lincoln banter, check out this 2cool thread.

Hay There, Something to think about..... Wouldn't it be nice if we had someone saying this today!!!! MB "You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another...

WWII is of huge interest to me, but I've got to admit that my recent study has been confined to sporadic readings and research of ordnance files learning more about weaponry. Since I don't make a living teaching that part of history anymore, it's just a hobby for now. I'll never forget going to Normandy. I actually broke out my Omaha Beach sand in class today when a kid asked me about a D-Day poster on my wall.

For a cool movie set in WWII, though not particularly a war film, check out Empire of the Sun. It is spectacular!

OOH, great !! Saving Private Ryan was the best... too real for comfort. I read a great book, THE GROUND WAR IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC. Most books concentrate on the naval campaigns and not the ground war. The book noted that New Guinea and Guadalcanal had the WORST terrain in all the world to survive in, let alone fight a war. More died on both sides from disease than action. Sentries had to sit on a 55 gallon drum/latines beacuse they all had dysentery and malaria.... it was awefull. We won because we could supply our troops better then the Japs could. Oh, both sides lost troops to local headhunters. The trees and vines were so high and thick that during the day, it was like dark, very little light could penetrate and the soldiers said they heard constant bird and animal sounds, but never saw anything. God, we owe a debt of gratitude to those teenagers of courage who fought and died for us... kids now just aren't told ... instead they are told to be ashamed of our bullying past and to worship Barack... what a bunch of CARP !!

Google up Kokada Track if you want to learn about some horrendous fighting.

Try to locate a copy of With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa by E. Sledge.
A damm good read. It one of the books the new series The Pacific is based on.
