Today I witnessed an airboat completely tearing up the marsh on Mud and Moody's Islands. They were purposely running over the grass and even cut completely across Moody's Island just running around tearing the marsh up. They seemed to have no care about what they're doing to the marsh.
Tonight we witnessed a green flare at Mud Cut. Thinking someone may be in distress, we called the authorities. While I'm on the phone with them, I can hear that the boat that shot the flare is an airboat and they're running all over the place from Mud Cut to Bird Island, then into SLP and down into Titlum-Tatlum. They then cut completely across Moody's Island to Cold Pass and Churchill Bayou to John Wayne's Cut. We figured they must be drunk or crazy, ignorant, or just plain stupid.
I'm thinking it's not cool at all to be shooting flares for no reason, no matter the color. We thought someone was in trouble and started gearing up for a rescue run thinking we could get there faster than anyone. I don't mind being inconvenienced from time to time, but out on the water is no place for this foolishness. We did not get a close enough look at either boat to get TX numbers.
It looked like these were 2 different boats. I know they're loud and annoying, but I believe airboats have as much right as outboards to be on the water, but purposely tearing up the marsh should be illegal if it isn't already. Just because your boat can go over it doesn't mean you should do it if you don't have to.
So, is it illegal to do this here in Texas? What about shooting a flare for no reason?
I'm used to inconsiderate people on the water. I usually chalk it up to ignorance and move on. But to me this is beyond inconsideration. What say y'all?
