You have to get an inspection if your trailer is rated for 4500 lbs. or more. When I renew my trailer plates, I was also re-newing my truck registration so I had proof of insurance with me, but I don't think it's required. Doesn't hurt to take it with you.

I received a letter stating I needed to get my trailer inspected before I could get my trailer plate . I took my rig to Krolls Marine who took it to a trailer weigh station where I got an official weight which was under 4500 pounds . Your rig is under 4500 pounds also . Get it weighed and then all you do is send in payment for the plate as before .GEORGE A. BRANARD, COLOR SERGEANT, CO. L, 1 ST TEXAS INFANTRY, HOOD'S TEXAS BRIGADE, C.S.A. : S.C.V.

It states on the renewal notice to send proof of insurance, your tow vehicle liability cover's your trailer so I guess just send a copy of proof of insurance for the tow vehicle along with your money. I renew on-line and have never had any problem, I guess they know if I have insurance or not.Originally posted by rtoler View PostDo you need to send proof of insurance and drivers license to renew your plates for a boat trailer?A Little deeper in debt.

If the gross weight is over 4500# it's required to be inspected and brake's also. All the inspection is, is a "safety inspection", light's, brake light's, blinker's, and they just look the trailer over, get their $7 and your on your way. I have seen a few trailer's on the road that could use an inspection, scary sometime's.Originally posted by Randy View PostI think it's 4,500# total that requires the inspection. I just renewed mine and it was the regular process for a tandem trailer.A Little deeper in debt.
