  • Trailer License Plate sticker

Do you need to send proof of insurance and drivers license to renew your plates for a boat trailer?

Not positive, but I think you have to get it inspected in addition to the regular stuff.

Inspection is required based on weight. My trailer doesn't need it. Might be 3000lbs but I'm not positive. I also don't remember having to present insurance to get the sticker.

I think it's 4,500# total that requires the inspection. I just renewed mine and it was the regular process for a tandem trailer.

You have to get an inspection if your trailer is rated for 4500 lbs. or more. When I renew my trailer plates, I was also re-newing my truck registration so I had proof of insurance with me, but I don't think it's required. Doesn't hurt to take it with you.

I think that your car insurance covers your trailer, so....as the man says.....bring your car insurance card.

I received a letter stating I needed to get my trailer inspected before I could get my trailer plate . I took my rig to Krolls Marine who took it to a trailer weigh station where I got an official weight which was under 4500 pounds . Your rig is under 4500 pounds also . Get it weighed and then all you do is send in payment for the plate as before .

It states on the renewal notice to send proof of insurance, your tow vehicle liability cover's your trailer so I guess just send a copy of proof of insurance for the tow vehicle along with your money. I renew on-line and have never had any problem, I guess they know if I have insurance or not.

If the gross weight is over 4500# it's required to be inspected and brake's also. All the inspection is, is a "safety inspection", light's, brake light's, blinker's, and they just look the trailer over, get their $7 and your on your way. I have seen a few trailer's on the road that could use an inspection, scary sometime's.
