Well, yes. It was one of those classic tournament days, in terms of me catching the fish that I'm suposed to catch anyway. Weather was awesome, water was beautiful, every spot that Mike and I checked was perfect except for the single most important ingredient, no bait. That pattern held true until about 2:30 when we went to a favorite shell patch that broke the trend.
Spot number five, held the first mullet that I have seen since last weekends freeze event. Unfortunately our fish didn't feel the need to help us win a tournament. If they had bitten about 30 minutes earlier......
The bite started off with Mike catching a nice 3 pounder about 3:30 or 3:45, we had both missed a bite or two as they were getting warmed up. I followed up that fish about ten minutes later with a 4.5. Then MIke proceeded to teach me how to fish.....His next fish was about 4- 4:15 pm I guess, and she boga'd at 7.5, WOW!!! there was a boat very close and he was trying to shake her off so they wouldn't see, I begged him to keep her on for the pictures. He dropped the rod and let her swim around for a minute and then, when the boat was at a safe distance, we landed and shot her.
Like I said, Mike was putting on a clinic for me on how to embarass your frineds with big trout.
He backed that fish up in about 5 minutes with another that was very nice, 6.5 on the boga. While he was fighting the first fish I got a call from a Jonathon Griffin, and told him, down the drink and get out of the weigh quietly!!!!! There was some urgency in my voice, and he knew what that meant. We caught a few more fish, and lost a few, mixed in a redfish or two.
When Jonathon met us and we got back to the spot, He tied on Mike's new top secrect lure, and caught two before the sun finally set. I think that he was only there for an hour, and caught a 4 to 4.5 and the second fish that was 5 to 5.5. He missed a few like we all did that afternoon, and had a couple of reds. There were some big ones in there. In the end, we had a blast!!! Catching big trout is infectious, and the fun that we had more than made up for not weighing a fish for the tournament. Oh yeah, I was the photographer yesterday, so I will use that as my excuse for not catching any more than I did....
Captured one of the most impressive sunsets that I have ever seen and some great friends enjoying the big trout bite that came with it.
Congrats to those who did well, it took some serious effort I'm sure.
