  • Spoil area , straight out from kema

    Learned my lesson,
Wife and I exporing and fishing checked out the channel on north side of this huge spoil island. ( huge square island )
caught a couple of rays on dead, then decided to go around to the east ( away from the ship channel ) . We commented
on the waves breaking on the rocks there but did not feel there was and danger as the ships passed. Nothing noteable on the
back side , kept our distance from shore nice calm flat 7 feet . I spent some time trying to find the wreck on the southeast
corner playing with electronics , couldnt find it , fished some as we made our way back towards the ship channel on the south
side. Noticed a boat at the south west corner closest to the ship channel so we fished some 1/2 mile out from that same corner.
We were drifting slowly and watched as two ships passed each other not far from our location.
My first hint of danger was the huge waves breaking agains the west bank along the channel, WOW i though , never go fish there.
this must have been from the south bound ship. Pretty soon, I saw my challenge, they looked HUGE. I thought maybe I can out
run them back towards the east. Nope. they streched out in that direction pretty far. Nothing to do but fight head on. ( movie perfect storm running in my head ) Throttled to the top of the first, cut power for the ride down. Power again for the second , the third and forth
version were not nasty like that first one. I would bet easy 5 - 7 and starting to break from the north side. We did not get wet , that would have been a great picture on the front page of a fishing mag. Lotta air on the first wave. , not going fishing over there again,
I wonder how that boat closer to shore made out.

Yep, you have ti be careful where you anchor close the channel for that reason. some places are worse than others. There is one to the northeast side of the end of the dike that has been there since forever. These are not small waves as you said and I have seen them breaking many times and capsizing boats. It happens when the ship is loaded and pulls a lot of water. Any bar or lump near the channel is subject to this. Glad you made it safely through.

Yikes ! I've never ventured to ship channel places like that because of stories like yours . Too many other places to fish .

I've been drenched twice by big waves. One in the winter and one in the summer. Not fun either way. Ship channel and dollar point is out. When I fished Amistad lake, I can understand taking the motor out of the water, or hitting the wave in front with a big wave of water coming into the front of the boat. Not a pleasant ride either when you have things floating inside the boat. Lord Bless.

It's amazing how much water those things push. You can get into trouble really fast. Glad you're ok.

But it was quite a ride, right. Glad you and wife are okay. Nothing like the thrill of a shot of adrenalin when you look up and realize you have a wave coming your way that could easily swamp your boat. Then you calm down and angle into the wave with a yell.... hah.....
You just have to watch for those waves anytime you are fishing around the channel regardless of where you are.

I belive there is something to be said about the area between the channel and the spoil, it is 3-4 feet shallower than the surrounding bay which seems to be a nominal 10 feet, that causes the waves to grow on you if you happen to be on that shallow flat. Yes it was exciting, and fishing from the beach all the years probably saved my rear end by recognizing, this is "bad" and working through the wave before it broke on me.
