The Penn reel was a gimmie,not a baitcaster.Been using them for the last -all my life-
threw that in there because the are the best in the surf.As for the Casting and reliable-I will still take Shimano anyday -anyway.I too have used Diawa,for the Millionaire to the new ones.I have used every penn spinner there is ..SS this or that..I will still take the Shimano even or that.I do like how Shimano improved the reel with the sideplate hinged to the reel,it was a pain in the arse-prior to that.I have had just about every baitcaster at one time or another and use to think that the C4 Garcia was the sheet...but no over the last 7 years.Shimano -hands down.Keep in mind if you gave me a Diawa Steez..I would not throw it away..Please feel free to send me one today and I will give you the test results.All the above is : JMO

First of all, what penn baitcaster are you using?? And then... Whenever you are ready to address the casting dance, let me know. After we finish up there, keep in mind, I'm not just refering to the casting performance, but the overall quality and reliability of the product. My other issue with Shimano is that the first Curado that I purchased was 89, within 3 years that same reel cost 129, and there were no improvements. They are far better today, but I seriously doubt that they would have done much if it hadn't been for their one and only true competitor.

I'm not saying that they aren't good, in my eyes they are the only two brands that really make a saltwater baitcaster worth owning.

I forgot one of my favorite things about the Daiwas. this allowed me to teach people that have never thrown baitcasters in their life within a matter of minutes. The magnetic control is a dial on the outside of the reel, no opening your reel side plate while on the water. here's another soft testimonial: Anyone around here ever heard of Jay Watkins? Rockport Guide, won every tournament known to man in the state of Texas. Booked more days of the year than any other guide in the state. Take a look at the hat he wears in pictures. Last few that I saw said Team Daiwa on them. Biggest problem with me working with them for 6 years was that they don't want to spend the money that Shimano did to build the name in saltwater.

LOL..I dont care what kinda hat Jay wears.I see him all the time and in GCC or aka Texas Saltwater Fishing Mag and he can wear whatever..LOL -
but,when it comes to reliable and casting distance and holding up to saltwater..I will take the Shimano anyday...I have had every Daiwa reel made (expect the Steez) and I will still take Penn and Shimano over anything else..You put on a skitterwalk,I will put on a Skitterwalk and lets say we have a little Distance Casting contest.... JUST SAYING..jmo

dude, you should cross the line to the true fairy side and take a fly rod to a lighted dock. The oly slime that will be on your hands is that from all the trout. I think that I can still tie the fly for the west bay canal trout, and they won't refuse..

There is a situation that can't beat a ultra lite spinning outfit for me.
Fishing for trout from a dock under lights and using a small Khale hook, no wieght and small live shad or glass minnows...deadly.

I prefer the 50Mg & the Core but casting into the wind I gotta go with the spinning reel.

That fish actually hooked me when I was using the bait caster. They're trash I tell you. I also hate that the drag is silent. I like to HEAR the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ when the drag goes out.

shimano spinning reels for me, all day everyday.. never let me down yet so i see no need to change.. yall can stick to your birdnests, harder to clean and more expensive bait casters.. both reels will still catch fish

over run protection. major cause of back lash is not having the reel set up correct. there are two adjustments on any baitcaster. spool brake, the lilttle knob on the right side plate, should be set and left alone. good starting point is to tighten until all free paly gone from the spool the back of about a 32nd of a turn. second is the magnetic, varies from one manufacturer to the next, and setting can change with conditions. Set this to cast with a light weight lure without backlashing, and you should be able to throw heavier stuff with no problem. you won't get max distance but it will help reduce the tangles.

I run nothing but Penns and Shimanos..the shims I run are the Curado's and the 300 is my favorite.
