  • Lower trinity and east bay guided trips (SHOULD I OR SHOULDNT I)

    Gentlemen
I venture into east bay now and again and lower trinity every once in a while but never really get up in it so to speak. I keep to the usual beaten path. My question is more about proper form and here goes.

I want to take a couple of trips into the more under the brow areas that are secretly not secrets. Is it bad form to enlist a guide and spend a couple of weeks paying for guides to better familiarize yourself with the areas and then use that information and locations when you return in your own boat. Im not a guide but would a good guide consider this potlicking? I have charts just like everyone else and excellent GPS on my boat and I have no doubt I can find the fish sooner or later but would this type of approach offend a guide if I where forthcoming of my intentions. What are your thoughts?

I would assume that if you were forthcoming in your intentions then the guide couldn't object. If you were forthcoming, he probably wouldn't take you to his honey hole spots. I have taken several friends to a honey hole only to return and find someone there who says they found out about this place from my friend whom I had introduced. so there aren't any secrets when it comes to fishing, we just like to think of them that way. As you said, you could eventually find those spots yourself. I always think of a guide as being for people who 1) don't have a boat, 2) don't know the area, and 3) probably won't be back or if so, use the guide service again..4) some people have more dollars than cents (sense) and prefer to have someone else do the dirty work. But those are just my thoughts. I wouldn't call it potlicking unless the fish were actively biting and they followed you up.

I would tell the guide up front that you want to learn the bay and fishing AREAS. Let him show you the back lakes if your boat will run in there. Use your judgment where to fish in those areas.

With some of the guides, you can take your own boat at a discounted rate. I would think this would be a better way to go and learn the bays.

I have attended two seminars by Capt. Jim West , renown East Bay expert . He showed places to fish and at what season . I've hired a guide to verse me on a bay . Places to fish and when , boat routes and hazards . Tell the guide you want to learn a bay and places to fish and when . You will do more motoring than fishing of course . Get a buddy or two to share the cost . One such trip won't teach you everything but will give you a good start . Heck , guides have bad days on the water due to conditions . Ask questions , take notes , put in way points . Most " honey holes " aren't a secret . Ask if it's ok to take your boat and put in GPS points . He's not going to give up any special spots to him but that's to be expected . Mainly you have to pay your dues and spend time exploring . Your hook and line map will take you far in learning a bay .

There are a few guides out there that will take you on a look and see trip. Yeah, be forthright with your intentions. Those guys have worked long and hard to find that stuff. Another way to find good spots is from using the TroutSupport.com DVD's to learn what to look for and then go find it. Those DVD's cover pretty much everything you need to locate the best places to fish and when to fish them. In the end I would recommend doing both, go with a guide and get the DVD's. Don't take my word for the vids though, plenty of testimonials on here and the internet and other forum boards.

Thanks for the input guys, Ya I don't want to offend anyone and your right, I have put in 30 years in the lower Galveston bays finding my sweet spots and underwater holding areas in certain conditions and I certainly wouldn't just give away my data card on my GPS to anyone. I will be forthcoming with what ever guide wants to take up the task.

Im all about a little horse trading. Seriously though, if you guys are ever out and nothing is hitting that plug. just send a message and if im on them that day.... Be happy to make a spot for you in the boat or let you know where im at and if im in them or not. I just like to see the look on peoples faces when they get on a nice fish. Im always ready and willing to help people find that joy. Just through a rock.
