Ray guards?

On one of my first wades I saw a guy across an inlet from me go down and then start hollering at a nearby boat for help. They pulled him out and held his leg up. I figured it was a ray or a jelly. I'd already been hit by tentacles so I was wary of them. And hearing the guy scream got my attention about rays. I wishfully was hoping my neoprene waders would be enough, but now I know what's best. Thanks everyone.
