  • Trout hole and duck blinds

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but here goes... My favorite winter time trout spot has duck blinds at each end. I've been fishing this same spot for 20+ years and pissing off the duck hunters in the process. I keep my distance and try other spots in the early AM, but damn if I"m gonna stay away all day so they can bag a few coots!

I'm a duck hunter too, but my blinds are portable and I set up off the beaten path and kill way more ducks than these sky blasters. So, what say you... Am I in the wrong? I feel a bit guilty, up until the slime gets to flying and we fill the box!

I'm with ya, Wikd Bill. Share and share alike. No, wait -- they've got guns to your hooks. You were there first, years ago that is. Might be fun to get there first and watch their faces fall as soon as they see you

I believe whomever gets there first has the right to hunt/fish there. This time of the year the fishing can be better later in the day and hopefully they're good shots and be gone.

STEVEA has a good point . If you are hunting in a place like that you must know that may happen . J

I hunt public. I am on the water by 4:30 AM and to my spot in minutes. I am usually done by 9:30 AM. Blind is portable, I do let waders know I'm there with a spot light or other visual device. I do tell them to keep their distance if they get that close. In some circumstances waders actually help to channel the birds into your spread as their boat and them walking flares ducks off the normal flight patterns. I prefer 1,000+ yards before you park the boat, set drifts or start a wade. Do not wade back towards a spread.

Most boaters are courteous and keep their distances. If someone harasses you while hunting you can always call the GW and report them for Hunter Harassment, make sure you get their TX numbers.

I try to avoid hunters just as I do other fishermen.

If somebody is hunting where you want to fish, then you need to go scouting for a new place to fish is the way I view it. I think it is selfish to put your wants over somebody elses when they were there first.

That being said, I've been guilty of running up on duck hunters that I didn't know were there until they were good and po'ed at me. Accidents are different than doing it on purpose though.

Just like if I want to hunt a spot that hunters are already at, I go find a different spot and a good distance away.

If its public land then both the fisher and duck hunter have an equal right to be there. Just parlay a red for a duck, seems like a fair trade, and everyone would be happy

Yeah you have a right to be anywhere you want but that mentality has led to a significant decline of etiquette in the outdoor sporting world whether it be fishing, hunting, or pleasure boating. Even on the beach, if you have an entire beach, some people still come and pull up right next to you. I think a lot of people are just clueless.

I use the dumb *** theory...I always assume the ducker is a dumb *** and will shoot me accidentally if I get too close. Catching fish vs Getting shot is a no brainer. Kind of like driving a car...the other guy is always an idiot and I need to watch out for him.
