  • Need FWE help collecting flounder

On October 10th TPWD will have their truck collecting flounder at Lutes Marine on Chocolate Bayou.

There will be a tournament going on to help with the collection, but I know a number of us here said they were going to try to net flounder instead of gigging them.

    Now's your chance to contribute....

The truck will be there from noon to 3pm.

They need as many flounder you can bring them but they must be alive and in good condition.

These fish are used to restock Galveston Bay Flounder, so your help directly affects your own bay system.

If you want to fish the tournament the flyer is atttached

That seems to be the only fish that I can catch.
I work just enough to pay for my fishing habit.

These fish that are caught, are used for spawning.

The babies are put back into the bay ...... A few flounder could be responisble for 100's or 1000's for generartions to come.

Only issue is, flounder from a certain bay system have a genitic gene tied to each system, so Galveston flounder can only be stocked in Galveston.

Not sure of your question, but will try to answer....

Texas Parks and Wildlife has been restocking fish in Galveston Bay for more than 10 years ..... It is estimated that 1-3 out of every 10 you catch is from a hatchery.

This has been done with good sucess with Trout and Reds, but with the issues with flounder populations, that specie has become a greater focus.

They have been collecting fish for numerous years, and in the past 5 have reached out to anglers for help with trout & flounder through the Coastal Bay team events.

That was being sponsered by some big companies, until sponsership ran out.

They used to hold an event at the Texas city dike, until the hurricane last year.

This has set back the program for the Galveston waters, and the biologist are still needing about 100 more flounder this year from the Galveston system.

Once the fish are in captivity, it's hard to keep them alive, as some don't eat, or can not adjust to the holding tanks. The life span can be from 2 -4 years, so new broodstock is continually needed.

Events like this one is very important, to help the Galveston flounder.

It is def a great help, I as yet have not got to turn any in but my wife put a couple small males in early to go with all the big females, i was slightly jealous. (of the fish). It would be nice to get Anheusers sponsorship back involved.

We actually went by Lutes this last week to find out where this marina was. We picked up a flyer and are expecting to fish. But I didnt know all of this about the flounder. Thanks for all of the good info. I do like the way one can win, really different, makes it more of a sporting tournament.
