  • Bridge work @ HWY 6

I was fishing yesterday afternoon at the pier at Louis and I was getting disgusted with what was happening under the bridge. The crew that is working on the bridge is chipping away at the weak spot with hand jacks and when they have collected enough of the chunks of concrete they stop and push it off into the water. I may be the only one that finds this frustrating, but I'd thought I'd share my frustration.

We may need to call the GBF on this one.

As far as harm to the environment I'm pretty sure concrete is pretty benign and might even add some beneficial underwater structure..

NOW - As to whether or not these guys are supposed to be dropping it in the water -- I can almost guarantee you they are not. This would require CORPS approval and nobody wants to go through that kind of hassle - trust me..

A quick call to the CORPS in Galveston would probably put a screeching hault to it..

That material, whether beneficial or not, is not allowed by law to be dumped into the water.
If it's on Hwy 6. TxDOT is the agency to call. Bill Brudnick (TxDOT) 713-802-5617

I'm all for more structure when it's properly placed but I work construction and I see people blatantly disregard proper disposal of their materials all the time. It's just really getting to me now that I'm getting older. I will confront people about it now. I've seen pool company's pump their acid wash solution right into the canals. I've reported those company's but I'm sure nothing happens to them.

Spoke to Bill and a lady named Deb or Debbie in the Galveston field office. They are going to check on it and get back to us. It is scheduled for light maintenance but they should not be dumping anything as Oleander pointed out.

Talked to Kerry over at TXDOT at Galveston office. He has already called the contractor and supervisors. They are on top of it.

Around 2 they stopped working and then got back at it and kept the debris out of the water.
