  • Anegada Pics of the Day

Caught this cuda this afternoon - weighed in at 16 pounds 4 ounces. Cuda are fun to catch - the "poor man's tarpon". This one gave lots of aerials and end-over-end jumps before I landed it.

Walker, do you eat those? I've heard they have a lot of bad stuff in them, mercury, bio-toxins, etc.

Cuda is good eatin. Most people are worried about the ciguatera more than anything, but all reef apex predators like AJ and snapper carry it just as frequently. I'm not too worried about the ones I shoot off oil rigs here.

Cuda and horse-eye jack are the only reef fish that I don't eat. The local wisdom is that any fish caught on the west end of Anegada is safe to eat - including cuda. It is supposed to have something to do with the reefs and current. However, having many friends here who obey that local wisdom, but have still suffered from ciguatera, I try to err on the safe side. Also - for what it's worth - cuda are the worst smelling fish we catch. Seriously - they smell so bad that I won't even cut them for bait.

          I put 'em back.

Alright, I have a pic journal request. I want to see a freshly captured conch butchered and cooked up. I love me some conch fritters and conch chowder.

We have more conch than we need in the freezer right now - and season is closed, so no pics of cleaning one until November.

However, here is a pic of the fritters...

                My recipe is here.

You have to quit sending us these pictures. The more I see them, the more I want to sell our house and move to the islands! We have talked about it for some time now and you are just driving home the reason why I want to do it.
