  • Boat Hard to Turn Left

We test drove a boat that we ended up buying last weekend. We loved everything about it, but the steering is significantly harder to turn to the left. I am guessing I need to adjust the torque tab to the right? Am I correct? The boat has a Johnson 70 and it is a tunnel if that helps. Thanks

Adjust the torque tab such that when you are at your preferred cruising speed and properly trimmed, the boat tracks straight with no steering input. With a single outboard and mechanical steering, that is something you have to get used to.

I test drove a boat with a friend that did the same thing and it wound up being water in the bilge.

This boat doesn't really have a bilge... It has two plugs above the waterline in the cockpit. And it has two that go to the back hatches which are both sealed off and free of water. The previous owner plugged up the live well so it wouldn't automatically fill up so he could save weight.

Is it hard to turn left? Or pulling to the right?

When you let go of the wheel, it slowly goes to the right. So I guess it's pulling to the right?

Ya its your torque tab, you don't have to move it much

Should I move it like one number over? (There are numbers around the back of the circle it's on.)

Not sure mine doesn't have numbers, but it was pulling hard and i barely had to move it

It must be a mechanical steering and not hydraulic. It may be the ram at the motor????? Is is physically hard to turn the wheel or is the boat just tracking wrong/ If physically hard to turn, then may be the ram IMO. If it is the ram, undo the cable and try to move the ram and use a light oil to help loosen it up-heavy axle grease is not good to put in those zerc fittings-use a lighter grease.
