  • Summer Job for graduating HS senior

    Hey guys and gals,
I thought I would reach out to the WEA network. My son graduates this June from Pearland HS and is looking to make some money before he enters fall classes at the U of H. Aside from the standard jobs i.e. wait staff, fast food, etc I would like him to do some real work that would pay more but also give him some expereince in a trade. He is qaulity kid with great grades and is not a trouble maker. He played football and lacrosse, is a member of his student council, active in our church, and is very interested in Digital Media (actually wons a number of awards in high school). We have a home in Sea Isle so he would love to work in G-town or Houston.

BTW he loves to fish and hunt.

If anyone has need of a smart, strong, good kid send me a PM or post up.

    Many Thanks

Has he tried for an Internship Program associated with his ultimate degree? Many companies pay well for summer interns (mostly large companies) and that also leaves an open door when he finally graduates. I would target the companies in his desired field that he is going to school for. Graduates that have some experience are far better career candidates than some other graduate that spent time doing non-degree associated jobs. They're somewhat hard to find, but if he has achieved awards, likely someone at his school would have some valid leads.

By the way, what's so significant about 9/11 anyway-was that a date my buddy Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground blew up a government building?" asked Obama to Hillary. Don't expect to be paid as an intern... I never received compensation for 3 years.

Robalo has some good advise if he's certain of his future career, but I'd suggest a different route. I'd recommend he spend the summer trying to make some money on his own. Too many people go through life thinking the only way to get paid is to work for someone else, that's just not the case. If he's a clean cut self starter he'll have no trouble making a few bucks. Clean out that elderly couple's garage, haul off that company's scrap metal, scoop golf balls out of the water hazard. There's no limit. Get him to keep track of all his money in and expenses. He may find he has the entrepreneurial knack and he can be out fishing while the peons make his money at his future digital media empire. Reguardless I know he'll earn a few bucks and learn a lot more then being a busboy. If he can learn how to turn a no into a yes and sell himself then come through on his promises, those skills will serve him whatever road he takes through life. If he does venture out into the world for hands on training in the free enterprise system the best bit of advise I ever got for being a one man rodeo is "if you're not loosing 2/3rds of the jobs you quote due to price you're prices are too low." Best of luck to him.

Yea an intern job at his age is also hard to get today. I'm a college freshman and looking for internships is hard because they still want people with more schooling in the subject and experience. They're looking for college sophomores at the very least unfortunately. He's better off looking for a regular job for the time being. Also, WestEndAngler's right. They don't pay someone that young and inexperienced the majority of the time. My advice for your son would be to look for a regular job cuz searching for an internship in his current position would be kind of a waste of time and not as rewarding pay wise.

This is his best bet. Go get em a weed eater, chainsaw and a push mower . A small yard can be up to 40-50 bucks. That's what I did years back.

Ahh yes the wisdom of WEA is boundless. All very good thoughts. My daughter who is in her 2 nd year at U of H just landed a nice intern job making good money yet it was pretty difficult. She has 3.8 GPA, on the deans list, and got the gig thru a sorority connection. Internships for soon to be freshman would be very hard to get but you never say never right.

He actually has 3 jobs right now but all minimal wage gigs and they are a few hours here and there. I was hoping to find someone that owned a company within a trade where he could learn something meaningful. If he had his way he would films hunts and fishing shows for free. Daddy pays for college but he has to earn his knock around money if you know what I mean.

Building fences, pouring concrete, roofing houses 10 hours a day would build crediability, self esteem while make some good money.

Thanks for the words and keep them coming.

(JFD94 this applies to you as well)

If your son is pursuing a technical degree, he should apply for the Career Exploration Program (CEP) through Universities Space Research Association (USRA). While it is very difficult to get into, the rewards are worth it. Based upon your field of study, they will pair you with a mentor at NASA so you can help them with projects. For example while I was a pre-pharmacy major at UH, I worked in the biomedical labs gaining lab experience and learning a lot about biology and chemistry. During the week you will work around 20 hours. During the summer months you may be able to work 40 hours. For the most part, they are pretty flexible with hours. The internship is paid and you get to work in a pretty cool environment. Pay wise, it was around 12+ an hour. Unfortunately, they probably just finished a round of hiring for the upcoming semester, but I would apply anyways because sometimes they have positions open up or even short term projects that require an intern.

                  Some requirements:
                  Be a US Citizen
Undergrads must be enrolled full time at a University or College (12 hours)
                  Maintain above a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
Be able to pass government background screening investigations
Be available to work 20 hours
Able to receive compensation without jeopardizing scholarships/ grants

Definitely a great program that is an awesome resume builder. If he has any questions (or you) just shoot me a PM and i'll answer what I can.

Here is the link to the program.

If it is to just make money waiting tables is the fastest and easiest way to get it done. Especially if he can get on now in G-town at Joes or something on either the strand or on the beach. If he doesn't really need the money the see the examples above.
