  • A bunch of dumb questions....

I am going to be staying at the Galv. Is. St. Park for a week starting this coming Sunday. I plan to wade and kayak fish. Since my kayak is motorized (goggle "Mokai" if you've never heard of such) I'm assuming I can't launch it at the park. I am assuming that if the wind is out of the S, I can kayak up and down the lee side of the island and be safe. I have light spin and bait casting rigs.

    Questions:

If I can't launch my kayak at the park where would be a good place to launch? Its too heavy to carry very far. West end Marina?

As long as the wind is not outrageous will the lee side of the island be OK to explore w/ my kayak?

Most importantly, how should I fish? What lures? Bait?

Does the tide matter? Are there any general strategies for how/where to fish the rising/falling tide?

    any tips/info greatly appreciated!!

I'd call the park and explain your configuration. Kayaks can launch from the park. Motorized is a different issue and I would think once it is explained that you're not launching directly from a trailer into the water, you'd be OK. This boat appears that it can put out a wake, so watch the no wake zones around Lake Como and portions of the park.

You can launch from Waterman's. It is very close, but has a fee. You could launch once at the beginning of the week and bank the kayak near your campsite, if you are camping on the bay side of the park. Just make sure you pull the kayak up far enough so the tide doesn't float it while you sleep.

If the wind is out of the SE (which is the prevailing wind) you'll be fine.

Go over the various topics and recent reports on this site for bait and tactics.

Tide does matter, read the article by Steve Soule, on this site about tide and fish behaviour. Like, fish the sloughs draining from the grassed areas during a falling tide. Here's the link:

Under the "news" heading there are a variety of other good articles.

Let me know, either PM or to the thread, what your plan will be. I'll have my kayak down next Sunday, after the Buffalo Bayou Regatta and may try and check out this new-fangled contraption. I rigged it up for the Regatta, and the season, yesterday.

last time I checked you could go on paved road till it runs out by the flats (on the bay side) and it's a short walk, 'bout 20 yards, to the water's edge where you can launch your yak. I think they still have a barrier there and don't let people in till about 7:00 AM on that side (west) of the park. X 2 on a weedless gold spoon..I've caught some nice reds in there on 'em. Otherwise your favorite plastics will work there too. Water's only a couple feet deep in the grassy areas so look for the deeper water. There are holes in there that are 4-5 ft. That's where I used to find them. Google Earth the west side of the park and you will see the road I am talking about.

            A bunch of dumb questions....

How difficult is it to cart your yak to the water? If you've got a rolling cart there's a good put in at the park on oak bayou.
